Takes credit for expanding the size of the Democratic Senate caucus from 45 to (likely) 59 in four years under his leadership!
Reid brushes aside the critics, pointing to the electoral successes his caucus has enjoyed in the four years since he took over as a minority leader with 45 seats and a president attempting to privatize Social Security.
"I've got 59 senators now, so I'm not doing too bad," he said in an interview yesterday.
His dreadful management style began on Day One, as he lumped the Coburn Hold bills together and called for weekend votes.
Reid issued another threat yesterday and vowed to hold weekend votes, a common tactic for Senate leaders but not one generally issued on the second legislative day of the year. "People who are United States senators should cancel their travel plans this weekend," Reid said on the Senate floor.
And of course there's been Harry Reid's victory lap on seating Roland Burris.
Asked if this was how he had expected to start the new year, Reid bellowed, "No!"
"It's certainly been a diversion," he said. "A lot of time has been devoted to that. But I don't think it's kept us from the other things."
Unclear on the concept of political capital. When you're derided everywhere in the political sphere for your signature move -- capitulation -- your leadership is severely threatened regardless of how happy your caucus colleagues say they are with you. Just ask Trent Lott how quickly a leadership position can slip away when the White House political office decides you're a liability.
Gotta wonder if Harry Reid is on Trent Lott's kind of borrowed time as 2009 begins.

Digg is open
For once, Teddy, I’m in favor of Senators becoming lobbyists. As soon as heavenly possible.
Dugg.
Heard that Our dear leader anticipates remaining in his position until 2015. If he is still in this postion in 2010 I would encourage support of his opposition whoever it might be.

Hopin’ and wishin’ and prayin’. Harry Reid is one of the Republicans’ best weapons. There could be no better agent than he who repeatedly facilitated warrantless eavesdropping on American citizens, curtsied to the War Machine, and stonewalled investigations into Republican corruption and illegal acts or turned a blind eye to it - while concurrently blocking members of his own party from any attempts to do anything about it. Not even AIPAC agent Lieberman would be as weak and lilly livered.
The Lott situation was a special case. 2000 and 2002 were banner years for the GOP Congress, yet Lott pissed off Rove and Cheney by refusing to sign off on the concept of an all-powerful Executive Branch; he kept insisting on the powers and independence of the Legislative Branch, particularly the Senate chamber thereof. So when the netroots and the embryonic prog-blogger movement forced the news media - which had all but ignored it for over a week - to talk about Lott’s scandalous remarks WRT Strom Thurmond, Rove and Cheney saw it as their big chance to deep-six Lott and replace him with the far more pliable Bill Frist, the Kitty Kervorkian.
TEDDY FOR DiFi’s SEAT!
Leadership in the Reid / Pelosi / bush style we can live without!!! One is almost down, two more to go! What will it take?
If Dems had 100 seats in the Senate Harry could find a way to fuck it up.
If Harry had pushed to end the war before Obama took office we would have even more Dem senators. Congress the House and the Senate’s numbers started to drop once it became clear that Harry and Nancy were not going to end the war.
This is like Bush trying to take credit for their being no more terror attacks after 9/11, well there was the anthrax.
But since Bush sent all the troops hunting Ossama to Iraq You can’t really say Bush stopped Ossama.
Good ole “Fightin” Harry Reid has replaced Lieberman as the most hated and derided political figure in the Progressive blogosphere. His whiny, irritating voice and the sight of him at the podium looking like Uncle Grumpy after a few drinks and a big meal, his habitual habit of standing up to fellow Dems and capitulating to Republicans, have made him an object of derision and anger wherever there is an article about his latest stupidity.
This Burris mess is only the most recent in a series of blunders that make it clear to those of us in the ProgBlogs that he HAS TO GO as Senate leader…and as usual on most subjects, we “angry hippies” are way ahead of the curve on this one….
HARRY HAS TO GO before he does any more damage to his party and to O’s agenda!
Democratic capitulation is a feature not a bug and it isn’t just Harry. It’s Pelosi, and Hoyer and it’s looking more and more like Obama.
Interesting example of the law of unintended consequences. I never thought of Lott as anything but a tool, but he was a tool who wanted to preserve Senatorial prerogatives, and so would have been a counterweight to Bush in the Dark Years.
It is evidence that the Dems’ lack authentic core values and the positions they espouse amount to little more than marketing strategy.
When Reps hold the presidency, Dems are the capitulation party.
When Dems hold the presidency, Dems are the opposition party.
Reid taking credit for the net increase in Senate and congressional seats since ‘06? Hubristic, Harry.
Why are these ‘get along to go along’ types like Reid and Emmanuel so quick to credit themselves for the accomplishments of people like Howard Dean, who co-opted the Republican grass roots strategy (that brought the G.O.P back from the wilderness in the 70’s and 80’s) and added it to the Democratic playbook?
Methinks the Seer of Searchlight needs to polish his crystal ball somewhat.
Seems that way.
So can we replace Harry if so with whom?
Reid is not change I believe in.
Reid and Ted Stevens both like to bellow the same response!
Guess Howard Dean had nothing to do with this having drug the DNC kicking and screaming into a fifty state stratgy

1,881 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Teddy Partridge and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
One Hung Harry Reid is a perfect example of the corporate corruption of politics and, in my opinion, the restructuring of elected leadership in both the House of Representatives and the Senate is jest as essential to long term economic and social recovery for the country as is legislation…Harry Reid must go, period and the Blue Dogs in the House hafta be whipped into shape and the best way ta do that is thru an activist DCCC…unfortunately, the DCCC is still in the business of incumbant protection and Wasserman-Schultz is back in charge of the money for incumbants.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE STRUGGLE GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
What did Harry do when we had a chance to get a real Democrat in Congress instead of JoeL? I don’t remember him coming out and campaigning against that rat (apologies to all warm furry rodents).
Citizen ThingsCome Undone:
How’s Russ Feingold sound to you as majority leader?
Why does Harry want to hold weekend votes? Harry is all about folding his cards once the hand is dealt, are we suppose to believe that now he wants to fight?
Harry can leave the majority leader’s job as soon as he wants, but just so long as he hangs around to play poker with me.
I need the money, and he looks like a good mark even for a lousy poker-player like myself.
Are you serious can we be that lucky?
Reid - bellow. LOL!
Have you heard anything? Does he have support? Is Obama backing him as his choice? When after Obama gets sworn in?
Honestly how has Harry helped has he Passed any tough bills and helped framed the debate before the election? Did he take a public stand on any issues when it wasn’t safe?
Did he rally voters at all in any way?
Feingold is not going to replace Reid. Don’t make me sigh.
OK stupid question, how is the majority leader picked? Is this a seniority thing? Was this question already answered and I wasn’t paying attention? Do we care if we hurt Harry’s feelings?
Harry’s feelings matter less than ours and ours surely don’t count.
I think the Senate Dems just have to decide to hold a vote.
From what I have heard Leahy would probably be next in line IF Harry is tossed. But I am NO expert.
Spew alert, please!
Harry is unpopular that might be enough.
Thank you. Was trying to remember exactly why and how that came down..
attack video coming soon…
Sigh. We can hope.
Does anyone know when the majority votes on 111th Sen. leadership position?
If Teddy Kennedy wasn’t deathly ill, I’d back him. But Chuck Schumer is much more likely, IMO. Unlike with Reid, Schumer’s in a safe seat and he’s a good deal more liberal to begin with.
Two parts:
1) dethroning Reid; and
2) designating new leader.
I’m hoping and the story about Lott’s fall is comforting but I’m not seeing it happening yet. Anyone would be better than Reid. Obama MAY find he wants to ease Reid out after all this silly drama …. but Obama is such a putz he’d probably screw that up too {yup that last bit is snark, lest anyone wonder}.
oooooh gods and goddesses NOT Schumer. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
hiya j!
On the other hand, Frist absolutely sucked as Senate Majority Leader — they lucked out in ‘04 because the Circle-The-Wagons mindset around Iraq was still in effect among the general public, but got smacked around hard in ‘06 when the full horror of Bush’s little war started to sink in. If Lott had stuck around, he might have kept the GOP from flaming out so spectacularly.
ok I take that back: EVEN Schumer would be better than Reid. Reid is THAT hopeless.
I think they have to want it too. If it was strictly seniority Byrd would have the position, then Kennedy. There are thirteen dem senators with more seniority than Reid. Next below him is Kent Conrad.

What’s your objection to him? (And sorry, we can’t dig Paul Wellstone from the grave — he was a natural backbencher, anyway.)
FWIW, I do recall people complaining about:
Mike Mansfield
Robert Byrd
George Mitchell, and
Tom Daschle
never getting anything accomplished as the Senate Majority Leader for the Dems.
I see Schumer as our Specter. He talks tough but he disappoints. And he’s too involved in supporting Wall Street employment which is a huge conflict of interest these days. What has he done that can recommend him?
And I NEVER said I wanted to dig Wellstone up.
Here is the senate seniority list

Michelle Bernard, of whom I’m no fan, gave Obama an opening on not-Senator Tweety’s wee programme. Apparently Harry Reid lauded Roland Burris, and his children’s educational accomplishments, in what Ms Bernard found to be a very condescending manner yesterday. “Oh, and his children have two PhDs between them!” She likened it to another politician who marked an African American presidential candidate as “clean and articulate.”
I almost think Ms Bernard was predicting a Lott-like meltdown at some time in Reid’s near future. I don’t like to think a Mormon convert like Harry Reid harbors thoughts of race difference, but she was quite insulted by his commentary, as if he was surprised that black offspring could accomplish so much.
Fiengold, Leahy, Dodd or best of all, Boxer, would all do better than Harry. Harry has no fight in him and does appear to belive strongly in anything. I would love to see Boxer as our mouthpiece and arm twister.
Boxer needs to get through her 2010 re-election without much fuss, but I could see her challenging Reid then if she wasn’t so invested in the collegiality of the Senate (see Lieberman, Joe).
The fact that there is a post over at Redstate proclaiming that Republicans could not have invented a better Democratic Majority leader in Harry Reid says it all for me.

“The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here!”

That’s succinct. It resonates and it burns..
Citizen ThingsCome Undone:
Unless Obama and the Democratic leadership thought that a Senator from Illinois would be politically correct at this time, I can’t think of another Senator in a safe seat with more’n two years on his term who would be effective and NOT a fascist enabler…not a lotta senior Senators who aren’t lawn ornaments.
Completely OT…But I want the UN, The Arab Nations, The Pan Africa/America Nations, EU, India, China, Russia and the rest of the World to tell the ‘United States’
‘If the ‘US’ uses its power of veto in support/protection of Israels continuing actions against the People of Gaza, one more time, then the US will also being facing Crimes against Humanity charges . Effective NOW.’
UN relief agency forced to halt work in Gaza

The United Nations aid agency Unrwa has halted work in the Gaza Strip, saying its staff are at risk from Israeli forces fighting Hamas militants following the death of two drivers. Israel also came under sharp criticism from the Red Cross, which accuses Israel of hampering relief efforts by delaying access to casualties. Ambulances were allegedly shot at by Israeli forces.

SunnyNobility @ 56: Perhaps so. But if I were in the Senate and had to deal with a leader like Reid (see Dodd, Chris and MAYBE Obama, Barack) my core values and positions would matter not even if I did have an excellent marketing strategy for same (see Kucinich, Dennis).
I hear ya, jackie: it’s horrible. The US really has the game rigged.
Sure. However, collective action is the name of the game - they can only be judged by what they do.
If they don’t collectively secure leadership reflecting coherent values and beliefs, their individual views are only interesting.
Very well said, SunnyNobility! I hope we can see some collective action to replace Reid now. Jane said they did try last year (2007?), so there is some hope.
Since I was grumbling about the same thing everyone here is, I just looked it up this morning to see if he could get ousted. According to Congresspedia
I don’t remember hearing about such a vote, but according to another area of Congresspedia:
From 45-59…and he still has his caucus doing nothing versus the Republican stalemate tactics. Pitiful. Now Reid will say that he can’t do anything because he doesn’t have the
“veto-proof” majority…filibuster proof majority.Knew these wet tisue leaders would take credit for this.
He did not do a damn thing but allow the country to be burned by R’s to get a few seats.
Bah, they are all in cahoots.
succinct.
And it would not be by accident either.
Just to be clear, Reid is elected as the Democratic floor leader by the Democratic caucus. It has nothing to do with seniority. The election took place in November, and he was unopposed. It was at that same caucus that Lieberman was confirmed as chair of his committee. Reid was the Whip, and moved up to the top job after Sen. Daschle was defeated in 2004.
The problem goes deeper than Reid. We have all these wishy-washy Democrats–the Nelsons, Feinstein, Landrieu, Pryor, Jello Jay Rockefeller, Bayh, Baucus, Carper, Inouye, Mikulski. Many of them are from solidly Democratic states, but they’re Bush Dogs in bed with big business. For them, Harry Reid’s fecklessness is a feature, not a bug.
Wonderful post RonT….it describes the Dem dilemma perfectly…also the reason why no criminal in the Bush administration will EVER be held accountable…thanks!
In the words of a man born 74 years ago today, “Thank you. Thank you very much!”
I’ve defended Reid quite often, but no more. Harry needs to retire, at least as Majority Leader. My first choice would be Claire McCaskell (sp?) but she’s from a red state, so her seat might not be safe.
oh then I guess in that Congresspedia quote (see my comment at 63) the “2006″ was a typo and should have been “2008″? I thought/hoped maybe the Dem caucus had voted right after they won the majority and then hadn’t voted yet for this term. rats.
I think Reid could be ousted at any time by a simple majority vote of the Democratic caucus, though I wouldn’t hold my breath until it happens. But if there’s one thing we know about Harry Reid, it’s that he gives in to pressure. I don’t see a downside to relentless netroots criticism of his “leadership”. Maybe he’ll grow a pair, or maybe it will encourage someone who would be a decent leader (Dodd, Leahy, Reed, Whitehouse, Klobuchar, Wyden, and Brown all come to mind) to challenge him. I’m from Wisconsin, and I don’t include Feingold aon that list because I think he’s better suited to being the conscience of the Senate than to be in a leadership position. And he obviously couldn’t get the votes.
Of course it never occurred to this egotist that the reason for the increase of the Democratic caucus was that the GOP totally screwed up the country.
So Harry is quick to attribute success to himself for the total failure of others. Did it ever occur to Harry that Congress has a record low approval rating, and that much disapproval is directed to the Dems? That if the Dems had a high or even average approval rating, that they would have even more members in their caucus?
Of course not. Harry is on a self aggrandizing roll.
