Reid and Lieberman won't say what happened in the meeting.
My guess? Reid told him he can stay in the caucus if he steps down from his committee chairmanship (a campaign we started shortly after the 2006 election, thanks to everyone who participated with pitchforks and torches). I imagine Reid told him they'll wait to do anything until the other Senate races are decided, but that's the way it's going to go down. Those are the rather well-source rumors circulating, anyway.
Joe now goes to see if he can get a better deal from the GOP, knowing his chances of winning in Connecticut as a Republican in 2012 are about "zero."
Please sign the petition to the Steering and Outreach Committee, telling them it's time for Joe to go.

I can hear the whining now
with that swarmy fucking face of his
a better deal fromt he republicans? hmmmmm, I wonder what that deal would look like.
No, Wobbly, (listening to the video) that’s the way his ‘droopy dawg’ voice usually sounds…
WATB? you betcha!
Reid’s statement:
Oh, and Joe? FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE.
Yep … he’s toast all right. Reid’s just giving his BFF some time to realize it.
Pooooooooorrrr joe, he has no sense. Goodbye joe. I for one will not miss you.
Hear ! Hear !
Sweet. Though, to be honest, I’m not quite ready yet to forgive the Connecticutian Dems who gave Lieberman a second life in the Senate. A lot of good it did them. I think he may must bail and take a job on K Street, where his partial Dem creds may do him some good. He’s got none left in Congress.
Traitor Joe:
http://cagle.msnbc.com/working/080625/thompson.jpg
Lieberman was more than happy to accept Obama’s support in his bid against Lamont. Joe knows he bet on the wrong horse, betraying his party and Obama at the same time - and lost it all.
Payback’s a bitch, Joe.
*applauding* my sentiments exactly
What are you waiting for Sen. Reid? It’s time to “settle all the family business.”
Being from Maine, I’m always imagining what a dinner conversation between Lieb and Collins would be like. You would have trouble staying awake given both of their propensities to take a breath with each word and try to finish a sentence in that stilted way they have of assuming anyone is actually interested in what they have to say. They are a mutually affirming duo in denial.
Old Joe doesn’t sound too happy. Good. They can’t yank those chairs out from under him fast enough to suit me!
bye bye Joe!
Lieberman crossed the line, pissed on the line, scratched the line into the dirt and he thinks he should be re-chairmaned with tea and crumpets? Give me a frackin’ break. On a scale of one to ten of crossing the line he was a thousand.
His words against Obama during the campaign are the standard of measure…not how much or whether he supported McCain. His tactics matter.
And if the Republicans want him, make the price tag so high they choke on it.
Persona non grata.
Furthermore, during a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.
While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.
Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.
Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.
Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction.
Obama loyalists were quick to express their frustration with Lieberman’s decision and warned that if he continues to take a lead role in attacking Obama it could complicate his professional relationship with the Caucus.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....05179.html
And let’s remember how that looked: if the Dems didn’t need his vote, they got it; and if they did, they didn’t.
Joe can rot in Independent isolation.
Lieberman’s a snake in the grass, but the lawnmower’s coming through…
judging by his rather subdued tone and quick retreat, i’m thinking harry said some mean things to holy joe.
it’s about fucking time.
Lieberman won’t get shit from the GOP. His usefulness to either party ended Tuesday night.
Yes, but since we are also talking Harry Reid here, we can’t just take it for granted that Lieberman is out. Even if he were allowed to stay inside the Democratic caucus, would he spy on them for the Republicans the way he has since his re-election in 2006?
Yep … no more sleepovers !
… anyone seen darkblack …
Of course the GOP won’t trust him. No one trusts a traitor.
Four years in the basement ought to be about right.
Since he got elected as an independent in 2006, and has been playing footsie with the GOoPers for the last two years, I don’t think the Democrats owe him anything, including seniority, at this point.
I want more senators like Bernie Sanders
Joe has risen above party to serve country and what better way to let him serve than to name him Ambassador to Iraq, since the surge won the war for us.
Joe is finished after this term. He won’t be reelected even if he remains an independent. Too bad his current term doesn’t expire sooner.
I don’t want to push repeat button. What did LIEberLIZARD just say?
OHhhhhh, that dude makes me shake with rage!
Whatever happens to that piece of shit will NEVER be enough payback for his treacherous ways.
Joe will be 72 in 2012, not sure he would run again. With the prospects of him being a back bencher in either party the prospects don’t look good. “Elections have consequences”
Love that image, Obama backing lieb against the wall. up against the wall, m**** f***.
After rinse and repeat 3 times with the eye bleach,
I have to say, irrelevancy looks good on ya, Hoe.
CT voters have a serious case of buyer’s remorse. Too bad a recall isn’t possible.
I think it’s time to revive the Kiss Float as we wave bye, bye Joe the Traitor…don’t let the door hit you.
I and many others have no remorse, just anger
Good point, the many people who voted for Lamont can hold their heads high.
While Obama made it appear that it was not an overly confrontational conversation (smiling, patting Joe on the back, etc), I guarantee you, in reality, he likely told Joe that when he won this thing, he intended to rip his nuts off and send him packing.
My contempt for Joe Lieberman is infinite and eternal.
Nothing has changed. I just feel a little relieved to see him finally go.
By all accounts, Obama always runs cool. Such a statement would be completely out of character.
So, Lieberman has seen the light and now wants “unity.” AFTER he supported the Republican nominee and trashed the Democratic nominee. He wants to have it both ways–I was for President-Elect Obama after I was against him. Beware of politicians who cry “Unity”–it usually means “everyone else do it my way.”
CT politics are messed up. We have a Republican governor with about an 89% approval rating who is a nice enough grandmotherly type, but for anyone who has ever been in a meeting with her say’s it would be a battle of wits with her and Ms. Palin.
Why does he talk so slow in the video .
Reid sounds like he could be persuaded by the other members of the Democratic caucus to dump Lieberman.
I hope Obama talks to Reid and makes it clear he doesn’t want Lieberman with any power after what he’s done during the election.
The sixty vote limit isn’t necessarily the holy grail, in that there are other considerations. First, Bernie makes it 59. But I also heard Bernie on Thom Hartmann saying that there might be a possibility Snowe or Collins (or a third NE Republican who I’ve forgotten) would forswear filibusters.
At first I thought, what’s in it for them? And then I thought that the Dems would probably be more than willing to go easy on Snowe next cycle, without her having to change parties, in exchange for not having to kowtow to Lieberman for the cycle and being sure of cloture. Or would they?
When did Reid move to Utah? (Check out the caption.)
“Sweet. Though, to be honest, I’m not quite ready yet to forgive the Connecticutian Dems who gave Lieberman a second life in the Senate.”
I think you may be blaming the wrong group: it’s my understanding that the GOP put him over the top, by refusing to support Schlesinger and urging CT republicans to vote for the Indpendent. Not sure if that’s accurate, correct me if necessary.
Could it be that Reid’s gotten commitments from moderate (sane) Rs (Collins, Snowe, Hagel, Luger, etc.) to “work” with Democrats thereby making slo-ride obsolete?
If they want to let him stay in the caucus, fine, that’s a nice gesture.
But, could they at least make sure he has to leave the room when they discuss political strategy. You know, like when they might want something to remain confidential among Democrats.
Why are you torturing my eardrums with Lieberweasel’s whine?
For the immediate future the vote of Ted Kennedy may not be there on some days, as well as Senator Byrd and his health issues.
exactly! Lieberman doesn’t have any leverage.
His mention of “options” seems to indicate Reid gave him some sort of ultimatum or deal…
They really should just boot him.
yes, but isn’t it better than having to hear “My Friends” for the next four years?
Hagel did not stand for reelection
He’s taking a hiatus from politics for a bit.
He told me as much but the image of those three at a Pyjama party made me remember darkblack’s genius … *g*
Heh. Listened to the painfully reasonable tone of his in that video, but it took about all the patience I can spare right now. That is one old dog limping towards the porch to get under cover as fast as it can, ’cause nobody’s going to open the door to let it in, and a hard rain is coming — might even be sleet and hail. Big hail. An old dog knows that would hurt. And cold, too.
Joe’s new office is an unplumbed toilet in the basement.
A better deal from the GOP? What can they offer him except a cushy Lobbyists job?
With Joe the Plumber as his entire staff
Snowe and Collins in Maine and Judd Gregg in NH….the last NE GOP-ers standing…
I imagine that Snowe and Collins will be less obstructionist than Gregg.
Obama could likely work with Lugar, Specter and Grassley on certain issues.
Even Huckleberry Graham and McCain might end up re-flip flopping.
-G
Lieberman is Joe the Plunger.
-G
Don’t you think those three would band together as the Irrelevant Caucus?
If I remember the rules, if Reid goes out to the mound twice in the same inning, he has to pull him.
Joe, Huck, and McCain
Has he been evicted from McCain’s buttcrack? These foreclosures are getting out of control…
Golly, didn’t you know? Senator Reid is a Mormon. And ALL Mormons must live in Utah?
Didn’t you get the memo?
Well, in some regards they are now in the swing vote column, like Jusitice Kennedy….
If all of the bipartisan prattle means anything, it also means that some of their asshats have to step up to the plate.
-G
yes please!
Stop trying to make me feel sorry for him. Bad dog, Joe!
Independents are the majority in CT. The republicans put up ‘the card counter’ because he was the only one willing to be the sacrifical lamb against what they thought was going to be another Lieberliar victory lap, enter Ned.
About 38% of democrats voted for Joe in the general election. His strongest base were old folks and people who under $45,000

not guys like this
LOL … I FB’d you.
MSNBC must have hired Sara Palin (s/l//) as their new geographic fact checker.
I’ve been listening to wingnut talk radio the past couple of days, for the laughs. really. anyway, Ins-hannity just led his show whining about how Droopy Dawg is being treated. as if anyone needs further proof that Reid is about to do the right thing…
Reid is going to let him swing in the wind like a pinata. Never was an a hole so deserving.
I heard within the past few days that the Republican losses primarily were at the expense of “moderates” like Gordon Smith of Oregon, meaning that the remaining Republican core is more radically “conservative” (whatever that means), as its moderate elements are lost. This Republican base is not likely to like much about Lieberman’s voting record. Rather than reach out to moderates, or so the theory goes, they will tell each other that they lost because they weren’t Pure enough. Lieberman hardly fits the picture. So, Lieberman can pal around with McCain, but there aren’t many others in the Republican caucus who will welcome him. I suspect he will find the Republican Caucus is a rather dry well.
So I predict that Lieberman will come crawling back to Reid, begging for crumbs, and promising to be a good Democrat. He’ll get a better committee assignment from the Democrats that he will get from the Republicans.
According to one progressive ranking service, Progressive Punch, Lieberman’s most progressive voting record is on Education, Humanities and the Arts, and on Housing issues. On both of those issues, Lieberman is THE most progressive Democrat, ranking #1! Give him chairmanship of a committee dealing with those issues. What committees have charge of those issues, and who are the current chairs?
Bob in HI
I forget which talking head would agree with you, but they were pretty much saying the same thing as you when they learned of Boner’s WATB response to the appointment of Rahm Immanuel as Chief of Staff. IE Boner is a die hard of the Wingnut Party.
oops , that was for Bob at 79
I got a solution to the joezoe tortureman problem
CATAPULT
where ever joezoe lands, he stay
whoever finds him can keep him
an I say we point the catapult at the ocean, jus my opinion
Why any chairmanship at all? He never did one thing about Katrina.
Aren’t the Oceans polluted enough ?
OMG … Obama is meeting Dubya next week … hope he takes an interpreter !
Joe’s chances of winning CT as a Republican are Slim and None, and Slim is leaving for a new job in Washington, DC in January.
“Why any chairmanship at all? He never did one thing about Katrina.”
I don’t think you know much about politics, and certainly that you don’t understand Obama. And I don’t know why you dragged Katrina into this when it has nothing to do with anything that I wrote.
Please remember that we are a few votes short of the 60 needed to stop Republican filibusters, and Joe’s vote could be the deciding vote on close issues.
No one should just “give” Joe a chairmanship. But it is good politics for us to give him a chairmanship on something he has good progressive credentials about, in exchange for a promise to vote with the Democratic caucus when 60 votes are needed. That’s a win-win for us.
Bob in HI
I foresee the committee head of the Special Projects Committee. The special project will be to find another job, of course. Time for letter number three Joe.
One source for eg quote is:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories.....9302.shtml
Title: Reid, Lieberman To Continue Mulling Options
OMG, the battle of two champion mullers. Yep, you two get right onto it, mulling your options. A battle for the ages.
Lieberman did not perform his duties as committee chairman in the midst of numerous instances of grave administration incompetence and malfeasance, and his committee had the jurisdiction in that area. His inaction blocked needed investigations and seriously harmed and endangered US citizens, including the troops serving in war zones, whom he hypocritically claims to support so strongly. That neglect of his Senatorial duty is ample reason to demote him. We need some accountability for bigshots who use their high office irresponsibly, and Lieberman is a good place to start.
Take away his chairmanship. Give him some meansingless and humiliating subcommittee. Let him stew there as a disgraced has-been and let the Dems and GOP kick him around at their pleasure. That is better than kicking him out of the caucus.
We are not going to get a Democratic agenda through Congress by hating and excoriating people who don’t agree with us 100% of the time. So let’s get used to one fact: Joe Lieberman, for better or worse, will be a Senator for the next two years. How can we make the most of that?
I’ll stipulate that Joe is an S.O.B., especially when it concerns the War, and foreign policy in general.
But on Education, he was more progressive than any other senator, voting the progressive way on 23/23 roll calls.
He was also the most progressive on Housing issues, voting the progressive way on 3/3 critical roll calls.
Currently, Sen. Kennedy is chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and he should keep that position as long as he wants to. There is no subcommittee on Education, although the Chair and Ranking Member could create one.
Housing jurisdiction is in the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, with Chris Dodd as chair. There is a subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development, but Schumer is the chair of that one.
So I don’t know the answer, but I’ll bet we get better mileage out of acknowledging Joe for what he does right, and giving him assignments accordingly, than for kicking his a** around Town about his major sins.
And, BTW, did you know that during this last Congress, Lieberman’s Progressive Score was higher than Obama’s? (by a sliver).
I know it sounds like I’m defending Lieberman, who I think is a ratfink. I do so only because I don’t like the hate speech and invective I see about him. But then, I talk that way about Nancy Pelosi…..
Bob in HI
Unless Reid is replaced as Majority Leader, I’m going to stop supporting the Democratic Party. Period.
A claim that ”But on Education, he was more progressive than any other senator, voting the progressive way on 23/23 roll calls” is false.
If you go to the website Progressive Punch as cited, you see that in the Education and Housing categories, Lieberman was Tied (that’s the little T next to his ranking) with other senators who voted the progressive voting positions. On none of them was he ”More” progressive. There were 14 broad categories, and on 12 of them he didn’t vote the progessive positions.
When the phone rang from the White House, Joe would hear and obey.
Lieberman bought that chair with $250,000. As for his promises, what are they worth? He’s a turncoat. He went Repub because he thought he would be VP. “Country first”?? and he would have saddled America with Palin?
Create a subcommittee on Education and put him in the basement doing a study on the statistics of the No Child Left Behind program.
I signed Jane’s petition.
