Put on your tin foil hat and heat up a bag of microwave popcorn. The cinematic geniuses who brought you An American Carol are convinced that a Vast Leftwing Conspiracy is behind the not-so-hot box office debut of their conservative yuk fest.
Other movies playing last weekend? Along with liberal sex symbols Pitt and Gere, new movies wrassled Carol for B.O. supremacy: The docucomedy Religulous and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, a capitalist family comedy with a far more sinister agenda--La Raza for small yappy dogs!
If making movies people want to see isn't enough of a celebrity-studded plot to corrupt American small town values--and based on Palin's family, I'd say those are drug addiction, drug dealing, underage drinking, unprotected sex, and pre-marital pregnancy--there seems to be a more nefarious scheme afoot!
Mpower pictures and Vivendi are starting to hear complaints about unorthodox treatment of An American Carol by employees of theaters that are carrying the movie. So far, ten theaters have been implicated in irregularities regarding the handling of this movie in cineplexes and other theaters—particularly as regards ticket sales...document everything you can. Put those cell-phone cameras to use whenever possible...
If [the tickets] have the wrong movie title on them, please take a picture of them and send them to the investigative team at An American Carol: complaints -- AT -- AnAmericanCarol -- DOT -- com . Please place the original tickets in a safe place and fill out the info on the AAC complaint site. They may need your ticket as evidence, should this turn out to be part of a larger pattern.
Could this be happening? Armies of pinko theater managers and their teen minions meeting in butter scented back rooms to destroy the rightwing feel-good comedy of the year?
Well, according to an anonymous source who works at an 18-screen multiplex in conservative Southern California city, it'd be pretty darn hard to rig such a vast conspiracy at the box office:
All tickets are barcoded. If a newbie at the box office prints out the wrong ticket, we'll catch it when we direct customers to the screen. Then they'll be sent back for a reprinted ticket. Or if the customer notices and cares they can go back and get a reprinted ticket. If this happens or than once or twice in a shift, the manager is gonna find out and the box office staff is gonna catch sh*t.
"Catch sh*t" is code for being put on bathroom clean up duty. Or getting fired.
So today in the interest of investigative journalism, I will be going to a multiplex, seeing An American Carol, and interrogating chatting with the staff. And I'll scan my actual ticket stub just to prove it.
Remember: Your $9.50 is gone -- don't let them take our democracy as well.

So true
I knew it. It has nothing to do with the fact that the movie is a stinking pile of doodoo and moviegoers could smell it from Orinda — it’s a vast left-wing conspiracy.
Let the truth be told.

outlandish outlashing.
heh. Jane said Orinda.
Who’d have thought the Leftwing would have time to undermine American Carol, being so busy getting Jamie Lynn Spears pregnant AGAIN.

OK — so you’ve got $12.00 to watch a movie or $25 for a date. Who do you choose? American Carol or — romance, dog funnies, Shia LeBoeuf(woohoo!!), or Vigo Mortensen and Ed Harris in a Western..even one with Renee Zellwegger? And this is a left wing conspiracy? During the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression? In times of trouble, people go watch stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13yhhjClzwA
Let’s see. IIRC, An American Carol opened in something like 1600 theaters last week. So ten divided by 1600 makes .6% - I don’t think that would fit anyone’s definition of a statistically significant number.
Probably more fraud than that just on average.
Very funny, Lisa!
I’m not going to bump up sales of a flic Rush, Hannity and Beck are promoting.
Apparently, living in a cave the past eight years with my eyes clamped shut and fingers stuck in my ears prevented me from knowing that James Woods is a Republican. It suggests that his self-proclaimed 180 IQ is slightly exaggerated.
Go get her, Sarah!
I can see a bloated Limbaugh type berating some pimply faced adolescent at the ticket counter and implying a deep seated conspiracy when the poor kid just hit the wrong ticket button on his first day on the job.
The Great Unhinging is upon us.

Ohmahgawd — they’re gonna make me buy the Enquirer to find out who the baby’s father is?
I’ll, uh…be back in a few.
weekend Gross. Point blank.
Good lord, this is right up there with Ben Stein and Company’s whining about how their bullshit fest Expelled was somehow sabotaged at the box office.
Okay here’s the blockbuster:
Go on. Really?
“The unplanned pregnancy came as a shock to Jamie Lynn, who’d been breast-feeding her infant daughter Maddie Briann, insiders say.” Oh, THAT’s real protection, there — haven’t you ever heard of “Just say No”?
She thought she couldn’t get preggo when breast feeding. Fundies love their ignorance.
“Jamie Lynn believed she couldn’t get pregnant while she was breast-feeding,” said the close source.
Bush’s abstinence-only nation of superstition, how sad and unfortunate. How many non-celebrity teenagers are in the same boat, minus the wealth and support?
OT - Bayh up now, doing the intro for Obama in Indianapolis.
And it stopped raining.
Looking at this really dispassionately - the Spears girls must have a lot of women out there really depressed. There was a period when the DH and I were going through ‘fertility Hell’ and even just seeing a pregnant woman used to send me into a locked room. To have two sisters who seem to be able to get pregnant over the phone — we won’t even discuss the concept of ’super-fertility’, but it sure seems to be an overwhelming trait in that family.
I had a good chuckle with this one so I’m sharing it, I found it on that missatilla link.

I don’t know if anybody’s posted this clip from Crooks & Liars. Scroll down to Open Thread and watch the clip entitled “Apocalypse John.” WARNING: Contains the c word towards the end.
Thanks for the update. I have no idea who that is but maybe they can have a double-barrel shotgun wedding with Treadmill Palin, or whatever Sarah’s kid’s name is.
Don’t ferget to get a good brain bleachin’ after ya watch that there movie ‘kay.

I just thought it was worth repeating.
Rumor has it that the baby’s name will be Shovel Sidewalk. /s
For God’s sake, woman, hurry! I’m never going to be able to get any work done until I know!

jhfc. Local NBC affiliate cut away from Obama’s speech after about a minute and a half.
feh.
I’m always stunned by how many people think they can’t get pregnant when they’re breastfeeding. I think that part of the story is a great “teaching moment” for a lot of people. I also think that this could open up a discussion about choice, which has been missing in the last three debates.
I’m so out of it….I never heard of this movie nor will I see it. These wackos think everything is against them - poor babies.
I will be doing my part to debunk this by venturing into the Belly of the Liberal Beast, HOLLYWOOD, specifically Mann’s Chinese to see Carol (okay a wednesday matinee, but still), paying for the correct ticket and armed with my shoe phone/camera, documenting the marquee, the posters, and box office. I’ll question the staff and query the quislings…the things we do for Great Justice.
Could be a teaching moment, if so many people weren’t determined to protect their kids from education.
I remember when it was Grumann’s Chinese and the Los Angeles Film Exposition (FILMEX) started out there. Those were the days.
Absolutely. I went to see this film, and there were lines around the block to see it. But the theater owners purposely turned thousands of people away with threats of violence and intimidation. The theater owner was wearing an Obama pin, not a flag pin! And to top it off, he was singing the Internationale! And he was wearing red socks, the color of the Soviet flag!
Honestly, even though I liked Airplane and The Naked Gun movies, the trailer I saw was AWFUL. Zucker hasn’t made a good film in a very long time, and his drought continues.
Maybe before you go you should boost your immunity to Rightwing propaganda by watching Zucker’s Madeline Albright ad.
lol.
love the handle, btw.
My conservative, rush-believing friend was obsessed with acorn today. What is that?
It’s an alleged comedy that pokes fun at a Michael Moore-type character. My first thought when I saw the previews was, “Didn’t the “South Park” guys do that four years ago? Only with songs? And puppets? And funny?”
Are you saying this movie is… Oakland? *g*
Airplane and the Naked Gun movies were pretty silly but had their moments. They were saved, to a large extent, by the presence of Leslie Nielsen. Also worth noting that Zucker was a Democrat back then.
The thing you have to understand is the conspiracy-theory mentality of wingnuts. The difference between a real conspiracy investigation and a conspiracy theory is that in a conspiracy theory, the conclusion is decided, and it grows to adapt to any contrary information.
Wingnuts are absolutely certain that the vast majority of Americans are conservative and want conservative entertainment. They also profess to believe in the free market. So when the movie tanks, the free market can’t be wrong, and their belief about the nature of Americans can’t be wrong, so the only possibility is that nefarious actions by the enemy have subverted them. Therefore evidence of such actions must exist, and only the slightest hint of it is necessary to prove the case.
ACORN.
I like slapstick and those 2 movies were among my favorites. I confess …..
Thanks.
I can see why Republics fear it.
Those were certainly better days, at least for O.J. Simpson.
Making fun and striking a guy (at least in the trailers I saw, someone was striking the Moore character) who does good, fights for the middle class, is a true patriot, and who goes to mass every damn day?
PFffft. May they have a swift trip to box office hell.
My favorite review of this piece of crap is still David Weigel’s:
I can understand why the wingnuts don’t like Moore. Either they thought a well-written satire would go over the heads of their key demographic or they were too cheap… or some combination of the two. At any rate, a movie comprised almost entirely of fat jokes deserves to fail.
Or perhaps the marketing of this movie is incredibly poorly done?
I am as about as disconnected from the entertainment industry as anyone in America, yet still for big movies I get some of the buzz while looking for news at places like HuffPost or Yahoo. I haven’t gone to movies much since my son grew up, and my moderate hearing loss has left me going “What’d they say?” to about half the significant, plot-moving lines of dialogue in any movie I went to. (The explosions and rock song covers come thru quite well, thank you.)
So I haven’t heard or seen any buzz on this movie at all. And just because of this post, and because I’m a history nerd with 20 years in research businesses, I tried to google up this movie to see how they were marketing it. Google’s top reference is to a “get your domain name” website saying that the domain name anamericancarol dot com is still available !! Other sites were movie rental sites or general reference sites, none of which had any reference to the movie on the first page! There is some sort of site up at AnAmericanCarol dot com, but it’s mostly just linking to actors and actresses named Erik or Erika, and a button for “related searches” for “AnAmericanCarol” goes around in circles.
In sum, I wasted eight or ten minutes of my life trying to get a straight-up summary or review or the producer’s own hype for this movie … and I still haven’t found a simple summary review, an actual review after seeing it either by a media employee or by an average citizen, and I certainly haven’t found the producer’s own sales pitch for their movie …
Zucker should try this new campaign slogan:
IF YOU DON’T SEE “AN AMERICAN CAROL” THE TERRORISTS WIN!!!!
Thanks for the compliment. Despite my acerbic nature, I dig them.
Zucker used to be a Democrat, and used to be funny.
But he’s been on a downward slide for a while.
Animal House has a well known liberal bias.
If you pitched Caddyshack to Zucker, it would be…
Judge Smails: Man of integrity, morality, and honor.
I’ve stated this elsewhere, but as there’s no reason not to repeat myself, here it is again: I recently saw some of Airplane for the 1st time in years on tv, and could not believe how bad it was. And this, after watching (and actually enjoying) the damned film numerous times during its initial cinematic run back when I was a kid. Time has not been kind to it, IMO; It really does not hold up well at all.
“I will be doing my part to debunk this by venturing into the Belly of the Liberal Beast, HOLLYWOOD, specifically Mann’s Chinese to see Carol (okay a wednesday matinee, but still), paying for the correct ticket and armed with my shoe phone/camera, documenting the marquee, the posters, and box office. Are you going to submit a full-fledged review, Lisa? I had the notion that dissecting this rotten piece of shit in merciless detail could make for some very entertaining discussion threads, not unlike the way that blog did that ran a page-by-page hammering of the 1st novel in the Left Behind series.
Wow, Jane. Orinda? That’s pretty darned far!
Yes, right wing nut jobs, we ARE EVERYWHERE! So hide underneath your beds and try not to wet yourselves. OK.
I went to the 10:15 showing of Burn After Reading last night, and out of morbid curiousity (and because I was a few minutes early), I poked my head into the theater that was supposed to house the 9:40 showing of An American Carol. When I walked in at 10:10, the theater was completely empty, the house lights were on, and nothing was being projected.
Possible explanation #1: Zero tickets were sold, so the theater wisely opted not to start up the projector.
Possible explanation #2: Hundreds of eager fans bought tickets to this movie - only they were really sold tickets to other movies in a vast conspiracy… and then they must have decided to go and see those other movies instead.
Call me crazy, but I’m thinking #1 makes more sense.
the film looked like a piece of shit… that’s why its not doing well…
to paraphrase the words of a Gen X spy hero: “if you want to shoot someone, shoot someone who sold you that script.”
