My dear wife was just watching Letterman on the tubes. I don’t know if this is ex ante or ex post McCain’s brush-off, but he was lethal on Bush. I would not want to be in McCain’s shoes.

And on McCain’s implosion. Why should we be surprised? Everyone except the indomptable Hillary has imploded running against him. It’s a measure of her quality that she stayed head to head with him right to the end.

The IndyStar has this lovely habit of giving full details of the when’s and where’s of Repub events, but when Biden or Michelle Obama come to the state, the paper will only mention that they are in the state. Full stop. No mention of where or when.

I agree with you here. Ever since his bypass, Letterman really hasn’t given a shit about his corporate overlords. And that’s when he’s NOT pissed off. Blowing off a celebrity interviewer to go do your job is one thing. Blowing off a celebrity interviewer and then showing up on another celebrity interviewer’s show is something else entirely. He isn’t going to win Letterman back, and there’s not much anyone can do to shut Letterman up once he gets on a roll.

I should qualify my statement: Obama has a great shot here - latest state poll I saw (in the IndyRag, of all places) had Obama up 47-44%.

McCain probably could have avoided the fallout by being honest, i.e. in light of the gravity of the financial crisis, we don’t think this is a good time to appear on an entertainment show. Of course, that would be inconsistent with the McCain M.O., which is never tell the truth when a lie will do.

McCain was out campaigning, getting Sarah meetings with foreign gov’t officials to bolster her cred, AND trying to prepare for the debate.

I think Wall Street is actually a lot more to blame than your comment suggested. The hedge funds WANTED high interest rate mortgages. That’s what drove “black affinity” marketing. Securities dealers were paying top dollar for high interest loans. AFAIK, most of these loans were made in the last two years.

I think everybody has ample reason to be angry about the Palin nomination, PARTICULARLY women. The idea that large numbers would cross over to vote for McCain simply because she is on the ticket is insulting. Women who supported the choice of Palin from the outset have reason to be offended at the way she is being sequestered and micromanaged by the campaign.
