I was on CSPAN this morning with Mona Charen, who repeated the charge that Obama is pro-infanticide because he refused to support an amendment to the Illinois Abortion Law of 1975 called the "Born Alive Infants Protection Act." She claimed the bill was necessary because of so many "botched abortions" resulting in infants who were "born alive" and murdered by hospitals who left them alone in to die in dirty linen closets, which I took issue with as a "right wing fantasy."
It's true Obama voted against the bill, but it was because the Illinois criminal code already prohibited such actions (which the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed). But the bill also had a lot of poison pill threats to abortion rights, and rightly went down to defeat.
Undeterred, by way of proof Charen has posted on The Corner the transcripts of testimony by Jill Stanek, a nurse who purportedly witnessed these incidents.
In an August 2004 email discussion with Stanek, Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn quoted IDPH spokesman Tom Shafer stating: "[W]hat they were alleging were violations of existing law. ... We took (the allegations) very seriously." Zorn further wrote: "Shafer told me that the 1999 investigation reviewed logs, personnel files and medical records. It concluded, 'The allegation that infants were allowed to expire in a utility room could not be substantiated (and) all staff interviewed denied that any infant was ever left alone.' "
The Illinois Department of Public Health investigated Stanek's claims. Nobody would back her up. It's all horseshit, and yes, a "right wing fantasy." Yet Ann Coulter used Stanek's account to claim that Obama "wants the doctors ... chasing it through the delivery room to make sure it gets killed."
So who is Stanek and why do they love her?
Again, Media Matters:
Media outlets have quoted or cited criticism of Sen. Barack Obama by anti-abortion activist and WorldNetDaily columnist Jill Stanek without citing relevant facts that undermine her credibility, including her suggestion that domestic violence is acceptable against women who have abortions, her support of billboards in Tanzania with the words "Faithful Condom User" next to a picture of a large skeleton, and her citation of a report that "aborted fetuses are much sought after delicacies" in China to which she added, "I think this stuff is happening."
They love her because she's insane.
I'm afraid Mona's going to have to do better than this "proof" if she wants to convince anyone who isn't a foaming News of the World addict who thinks aliens have landed in Ireland and produced a race of Lepprichauns that Obama is a baby killer.

Ms. Stanek must have been going through apoplexy during the Olympics!
I read the comments this morning over at the mothership and you did a good job on Mona and getting your points across. It sounds as if getting a word in edgewise was an issue. Keep up the wonderful work you do!
Stanek must be enraged at former Alaska Governor Knowles who outlawed Palin’s Police department policy of charging rape victims for the kits their own criminal investigations. How dare he let those sl*ts be victims, no doubt they asked for it!!!
Jane, thanks for posting this. I assumed Charen was lying, and having the proof is so helpful.
It no longer matters that these folks lie. They just repeat it again and again, and the media plays their lies again and again, and folks says, “well, I heard it on tv that . . .”
Way to go Jane by asking Mona to cite an example this am. Her fluttering eyes while telling that bogus lie about what happened in that delivery room was just as disturbing to me as the what was fluttering out of her mouth.
Handmaidens Tale is quickly approaching
girls hold onto your vaginas ,like guys hold onto….well you know what
They love her because she’s insane.
It is a prerequisite for republics you know. The crazier the better.
Does Mona have any children?
I believe she has at least 1
yea just did wikki…she has 3 sons with a lobbysit …they are Israel firsters
back to housework drudgery …bbl
I was on CSPAN this morning with Mona Charen….
Hopefully, that wasn’t the first face you saw this morning, as was the case with me.
(Aaackkk), but I knew the day could only get better from there… *g*
before America, whenever the choice is theirs..
Hi all, just finished the east bay this morning, SF/Marin next. These are from the day before yesterday:

Sacramento tomorrow, Portland/Seattle after that… yours, scarlet
Has anyone asked an OB/GYN how many late term abortions they’ve either seen, done or heard about in their years of practice? I’ve never, ever heard anyone ask an OB about this on teevee or radio.
I have. My doc has been in practice for almost 40 yrs and has had hospital privledges at hospitals in Metro Atlanta,GA ,Los Angeles,NYC and Miami. He’s a wonderful doctor, especially for those women(like me)who had high risk pregnancies.
In all that time,he’s NEVER encountered such a thing, though his training did include how to do the proceedures and the protocol that warrants such a thing. I asked other doctors in his practice and their feedback was pretty much the same. Only one had heard of such a thing,in this case the baby had died in the 34th week and the mother was in bad shape medically(not to mention emotionally). This is a large practice in Metro Atlanta with docs having years of experience. If it was common, one would think all their careers would have included at least one late term abortion.
“I’m afraid Mona’s going to have to do better than this “proof”…..”
Agreed.
But more to the point, given her track record of willful obfuscation, CSPAN is going to have to do better than Ms. Charen the next time they invite someone to come on to criticize Mr. Obama’s record re: a woman’s right to choose.
After all, if someone lies repeatedly, on purpose, shouldn’t that be it for them?
Because if media outlets did this, and only this, wouldn’t it go a long way towards making this madness stop?
.
Seems the repukes only know how to lie!! How many lies have we heard in the last seven years??? Hundreds, thousands , millions?? We will never know as to them a lie is the same as the truth!!
BT is upstairs
Yeah, RossK, but this crap sells copy… That’s the goal. Truth? C’mon!
My local rag (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette) treats me every Sunday in the Op-Ed section, to the likes of Ms. Charen in addition to a well rounded cast of Cal Thomas and frequent doses of “Bloody” Bill Kristol. Although Krugman got front & center today concerning teh Freddie Mac/Fannie May bailouts, there is essentially zero “progressive” representation here.
;(
Jane,
Great job this morning on CSPAN with Cruella DeVille! Here’s Sarah’s next e-bay add:
For Sale: Earth…Like new. Only 5,000 years old. Well cared for…no sign of damage from Global Warming by current tenants.
Blue Texan over at the Mothership on some more liars from the Rs
I’ve been watching the rebroadcast on C-span, wishing I could pass you Homie the clown’s sock through the TV screen. I know you’re not violent, but that lady needs a motivation to stop lying and a regular drubbing with a sock may have been more effective than your valiant but futile attempts at reason.
Nice, John.
Ad-nauseum, supremely well presented, and undoubtedly true, in the minds of those who can’t wait to get to heaven, where, presumably, they can continue to lord it over everyone else, lie with impunity and make miserable the lives of any whom ‘they’ deem to be ‘haters’ as doth Sarah,
small and $amed …
Jane,
You did a fantastic job on CSPAN this morning. I loved the way you challenged Ms Mona! Those republicans are all alike, they try to out talk you by never allowing their opponents to express their views. They are so blind at the fact that Palin is not qualified to lead anyone to a dog fight. Most of these nuts had already made up their mind not to vote for Obama from the beginning—therefore no matter what, they will drink the koolaid.
On “That’s My Bush,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone did an episode where Bush has to invite an ‘abortion survival’ baby to a White House dinner. I think the R’s are stealing their material from these guys.
I should have known it would be online
You are not being truthful Jane. I saw the exchange. You said point blank, “that never happened” when confronted with the facts of a particular case. She posted the testimony. Why don’t you admit you didn’t have your facts straight and she did.
She didn’t call him a baby killer, she merely said he was out of touch with the mainstream on this issue which he is. Why the “over the top” rhetoric?
The person making these claims is a right wing anti-abortionist named Jill Stanek
No one could corroborate her claims it was her word and no one elses!
Hardly proof in my book.
Ps ever hear of google?
Mona left out the “dirty linen bin” in her original article….FACT?
“It happened recently”….FACT?
What were the “facts” of the mother’s circumstance, something a doctor would consider?
There must be some reason for this physician to have invented late term abortion.
IT IS NOT against the laws of the United States government to have an abortion! Majority rules.
Testimony? Under oath and all? where does one find this FACT?
Not a pleasant subject to be reviewing, especially when the truth is so elusive.
What is one to believe with outlandish rhetoric from the one who investigated and wrote about the “recent” snafu ?
Let “Baby Hope rest in peace- her mother’s difficult decision, not ours, not yours.
Jewish World Review May 17, 1999 /2 Sivan, 5759
Mona Charen
Baby Hope
(JWR) —- (http://www.jewishworldreview.com)
THE WOMAN WAS 22 WEEKS PREGNANT when she sought the assistance of Dr. Martin Haskell, the originator of the partial-birth abortion procedure, to rid herself of her already-kicking child.
Haskell performed the first stage of the partial-birth abortion. He inserted a seaweed-based substance into the woman’s cervix and instructed her to return the following day. In the usual course of events, the seaweed absorbs the amniotic fluid from the womb and expands, thus slowly dilating the cervix. The next day, new seaweed is inserted. On the third day, the abortionist opens the cervix with his fingers, feels around for the baby’s legs and pulls them out of the birth canal. He rotates the fetus’ shoulders so that the baby’s face is oriented toward the mother’s lower back and then, using scissors, he punctures the bottom of the baby’s skull and suctions the brain out through a tube.
But in this case, things did not go according to plan. The woman complained of severe abdominal pain on the first night and, being far from Haskell’s clinic, reported to the emergency room of her local hospital, Bethesda North, in Cincinnati. As she was being examined (she did not say she was pregnant), the baby was born — alive. Pediatricians and neonatologists came running. The baby girl weighed in at 1 pound. The doctors decided that the child was very unlikely to survive and instructed that nothing be done.
Connie Boyles, a nurse, and Shelly Lowe, a medical technician, saw the baby girl gasp for air and were stunned. Lowe, knowing that the nurses were busy caring for other patients in the emergency room, asked if she could hold the child she dubbed “Baby Hope” until she died. The request was granted.
Lowe wrapped Baby Hope in a blanket and settled into a rocking chair for what she imagined would be just a few minutes. She sang to her and stroked her cheeks. “I wanted her to feel that she was wanted,” Lowe explained later. “She was a perfectly formed newborn, entering the world too soon, through no choice of her own.” The baby sucked on her lower lip, opened and closed her hands, and moved a bit as Lowe held her. She also did something else — she continued to breathe on her own.
Dr. John Willke, a pro-life activist and former obstetrician, says he doesn’t quarrel with the initial determination made by the emergency-room physicians that Baby Hope was too small and too premature to survive. But, he says, when she was still alive and breathing room air 30 minutes after birth, her status should have been reassessed. An excellent neonatal care unit was a mere helicopter ride away. And she might have been saved.
As it is, nothing was done. After three hours, Baby Hope died in the arms of the compassionate Shelly Lowe. The state of Ohio issued her a death certificate. The cause of death was listed as “extreme prematurity secondary to induced abortion.” Would Dr. Haskell have issued her a death certificate at his shop, or does he simply throw the bodies in the trash?
Very few premature infants survive when born before 23 weeks, though there have been survivors at 22 weeks. Still, one has to wonder: If a woman who did want her baby spontaneously aborted in an emergency room, would the doctors have been so quick to give up on the child? Would they ignore the signs of unusual vitality this infant showed? (Most premature babies have trouble breathing without assistance. That this infant was able to breathe room air was amazing.) Was Baby Hope’s value as a human being secondary to her value to the mother?
If we judge people’s humanity by any standard other than that each is a unique individual with G-d-given rights, we demean every person’s dignity. A child is a child. Would-be adoptive parents wait years and years or go abroad in search of children to love.
Lowe was asked at a press conference what her position on abortion was. She said she had been pro-choice but was now pro-life. What changed her mind?
Three hours.
JWR contributor Mona Charen reads all of her mail. Let her know what you think …..

Wow, using a total crank like Stanek as a source. That really builds confidence.
Stanek is a joke in the state of Illinois. Read Archpundit here and especially here
Except it’s not a “fact,” it’s a halucination, it never happened, some nut job just said it did.
It’s right-wing reality, i.e., a fantasy world they live in where they can just make shit up. They investigated, nobody could back up her ridiculous claims.
Jane, I saw you on C-Span with that republican this morning, and the republican made me realize something. When the lady called in and compared the educational achievements of the candidates and the republican went into a tirade about the caller being an elite snob, it suddenly hit me. The reason that the educational system in this country is so bad is not because of the schools, it’s because the republicans have turned getting an education into something only elite snobs do. It was so clear!!!
Thanks Jane!!

Be well! …And keep punchin’ them in the nose!!
XOXO

Jane,
I saw the replay of your CSPAN appearance today. Good to hear your voice for sanity!
Bob in HI
I suggest to all you nay-sayers that this never happens….please put the words “Botched Late Term Abortions” into Google. I live in Wichita where the infamous Dr. George Tiller resides and kills babies.
Jane, if I had been an Obama fan, upon watching the C-Span talk show with you and Mona Cheren (I never heard of either of you before so I am certainly not playing favorites)I would have considered that you bordered on high pitched closemindedness and I would be reconsidering who I was voting for….
Why is it that you don’t want to face the truth? Is it so important to pro-choice people that the babies aren’t real people that you block the possibility of botched abortions? When it comes to medical procedures, there is botched everything! Please do extensive research on the subject before you say to the nation that it is a Republican fantasy…
The other person (Mona Cheren) didn’t come off sounding hysterical like you did or having the contorted facial movements. She seemed the voice of reason…and at least used partial facts to support her claim. I see she responded to your original post on this with the exact data. I see also that you have declared that particular nurse ‘crazy.’ What is the possibility that no one at the hospital would back her for fear of losing their job? You don’t even allow for ‘possibilities’, you hurry to call it right-wing fantasy.
Jane
I saw on c-span and you were great! It was a joy seeing you on the tube.
