Update at 10:41 (pacific) Lindsay just saw 12 bicycle cops ride past in gas masks - and there are reports that "Justice Department officers directing riot police on 6th St to "get ready" are popping up on the Indy tweets.
Lindsay, Glenn and Jane are out in St. Paul getting the story from the ground as the RNC starts up – and we’ll be bringing you continuing news throughout the day.
A large march to the Excel Center is beginning in about an hour and folks are rallying now – undeterred by the police raids you’ve already seen reported here. As Matt Stoller notes, the RNC is meeting in their very own Green Zone while the pepper spray and arrests have already started in the streets of St. Paul today.
So just who are these people and why are they gathering in the streets to march on the RNC?
Meredith Aby, a member of the (Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War) coalition said:
The anti-war movement has ALWAYS had a demand of money for human needs not for war, and Hurricane Katrina was one of the reasons for that demand. Hurricane Gustav affects the Republican Party because they don't want to be seen as ignoring another crisis as they did when they left people to die on freeway overpasses. The demonstration will be voicing opposition to the war's prioritization above human needs such as building levees, the economy, healthcare, etc.
Listen also to Starhawk who explains her reasons for being in St Paul:
I’m here really just to bring home to the Republicans the truth that wrecking the country might have some negative consequences. The Democrats have failed to hold them accountable. Most of the country is wrapped in a sullen, smoldering anger that does not yet lead to action. But some of us are here, plotting and planning our marches and counter conventions and direct actions. And while it may prove to be a major slip in my ongoing struggle with Frustration Addiction, I’m glad to be here with a crew of old and new friends, those buddies I’m bonded with in the way you only get to be when you’ve stood shoulder to shoulder as some cop shoots you in the face with pepper spray.
At a ritual last night, Starhawk spoke of the core belief that leads her and so many others to gather:
Each of us is part of the web of life, and precious, bringing our own unique gifts to the world. We don’t ask people to believe in things, not even the Goddess who is simply our term for the great creative mystery that weaves the world. But we do ask people to believe in yourself, in your own deep work, in your sacred purpose. You are here for a reason.
Pretty scary folks, eh? They certainly frighten the RNC!

People with firm convictions, who know their rights and exercise them, are frightening to a minority who rule from the shadows.
The power structure grows increasingly desperate, and extraordinarily dangerous given the tools of power handed to them by our elected “representatives.”
Hurricane Gustav is a paltry threat by comparison.
Congrats and gratitude for those on the ground, giving us a peek inside.
Take care people. Why am I not seeing this on my teevee screen?
Please be safe up there.
Beautiful.
I never have problems with cops. The whole point of having signs is that you don’t have to hold them, they do the speaking for you.

some pretty ones here…
Well, remember the RNC convention in NYC four years ago - the people they were scared of were the bicyclists from Critical Mass! Hundreds of those folks (and innocent passersby on the street, delivery kids for pizza, etc.) were rounded up, their bikes impounded and trashed, and then the people were put inside old filthy warehouses on the piers to wait it out. The suits against the city and the NYPD went on for months.
Hope our folks are staying safe out there!
Bravery in the face of terrorism by the corporate police. Standing tall shoulder to shoulder while defenseless to the attack of well armed horse police while being gassed intp convulsions.
That is courage, turnng the other cheeck in the face of assualt.
Where is the fucking media worms? Who is not outraged is an obfuscator.
Thes demonstrators are armed with courage.
THese demonstrators are standing for our constitution. This will go down as a Haymarket Massacre event.
Please support these patriots will medical help.
Submitted and DUGG!
Bring on the shovels!
Seriously folks, we’re the only ones who can get this some attention.
msm is failing us AGAIN!
I can’t believe that US Attorney Rachel Palouse isn’t somehow involved.
The US attorneys scandal was always more about those who were hired than thosae who were fired.
OT, turns out Palin was the director of Ted Stevens’ 527 group!
They bounced her ass in January.
I explained to a small group here yesterday if this can happen in Minneapolis it can happen anywhere in the USA. It as if the pepper spray and horse calvary are against each of us. They totally got it just didn’t know what to do or wee’n't gonna make the effort. The fruits of FISA FUBAR and other legislation enabling government to take our freedoms. Support the troops in Minneaplois!
OT, have you guys heard this: breaking news - Briston Palin is 5 mos pregnant, planning to marry the father. No joke. I’ll be back with a link in a moment.

Sorry for OT Siun
oops, I’m sorry siri, somehow I overdugg you
this is the digg at the link uptop
The politicization of Justice department enabled law enforcement to step over the constitutional lines, abuse police powers and attack those they view as the enemy to their newly found authority. This just the beginning of fascism.
As I have said repeatedley the bridle on power lies with the Congress who refuse to use the impeachment tool given for this reason. Obfuscators. By proxy it is congress that is gassing the kids in the peace demonstration.
Thanks for collecting this info, Siun. Please pass along our wishes for safety to everyone we have up there collecting the stories for us.
While we are having people arrested in the Twin Cities for “conspiracy to riot”, here in my hometown a business actually has put up a sign that reads “Get your guns today the Democrats are coming“. Unbelievable. Suppose this guy will be prosecuted similarly? Not bloody likely.
you are so right
The RNC and their buddies in the law enforcement community are trying to provoke a much larger protest and reaction. They want to create 1968 all over again, so they can tell the American people that this is how the Democrats operate. No other reason to take such a preemptive, brutal approach to a bunch of anti-violence protesters. You can see this coming from a mile away. Don’t take the bait, folks.
I heard on the radio that McCain knew that before he picked Palin.
Nice job child rearing values on display. Lynne Spears must have
turned him down.
That is horrible. Where are the Christian values?
Norskeflamethrower is marching along with his family. Hope he’ll report when he gets home. Hope they’re all okay.
All that big gubmint money earmarked for heavy handed over abundant SECURITY has to be put to use. Security which endeavors to provoke riots. These riots will by played in the MSM as police squelch radical insurrection. Tail Wags the Dog.
There will be no reporting otherwise.

That was my thought, too, when the protestors were cornered for *two hours* in Denver.
I can’t believe they are gassing journalists and using water hoses
jfc
Weren’t Republicans predicting a repeat of the ‘68 DNC in Denver? Since it didn’t come to pass, looks like they are determined to make it happen in St. Paul.
There is also talk of cops riding horses into groups of protesters and cops firing rubber bullets. Let’s hope they don’t have any live rounds.
Violence being reported on CNN w/ windows being broken and bus stop benches being thrown into streets.
Kossacks please rec this diary linking to Siun’s reporting here at the Silo.
Thanks!
Our country was founded on dissent. Many of the early European settlers (at least the ones we mythologize in our schools) came here because of their dissents. The Founders started a revolution and created a country because of their dissent. The Framers enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution their belief in dissent. But dissenters are seldom honored at all or only after the fact, sometimes long after the fact. It is pattern that repeats itself again and again, and reminds me of what George Bernard Shaw wrote, “We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.”
Does any tech person know if this is on my end or with the site itself??
Of course MSM coverage will make it clear that protesters got what they had coming.
People who weren’t around at the time are unlikely to realize that media coverage of the civil rights movement was like that. White Americans were led to believe excessive responses by police was provoked by demonstrators. It wasn’t until events like the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham that most people began to realize the segregationists were the real culprits.
I’ve been experiencing similar problems intermittently of late and the server seems a tad sluggish in general.
no matter Elliot!
Just so it gets done!
thanks.
K. Thanks.
I like this one:
new post, and I am not submitting it to digg so go for it siri
Breaking: Pepper Spray and Rubber Bullets in the Streets
I just thought that I’d reiterate that this “Real America vs Anarchists (Democrats)” storyline being sold to and via the Passé Press (even right at this very moment on CNN), is the deliberate construct from the bizarro minds of folks like Turdblossom and his acolytes like Turdblossom-protégé Steve Schmidt of the McSame campaign.
The idea is to frame the American Public’s view of reality as Turdblossom fantasizes it:
“Real America (the Repug party) here in the Vaterland is your only hope of standing up against the anarchy and chaos desired by Democrats, Liberals, Gays, Minorities, Abortion-lovers, Flag-burners, etc.”
Some view this as the public face of the police state, but you should be far more cynical than that.
This is black-politics as practiced by Repug strategists like Turdblossom to invent a simulacrum of reality that exists only in their demented minds. This is politically-driven fear-mongering stagecraft with the only real goal of Repugs trying to retain their power.
Excellent. With so many people out of work, the very unpopular war in Iraq, torture at the behest of the major players, and on and on, they need a shiny thing to distract attention from the disastrous policies and un-compassionate conservatism practiced by this admin.
I’m confused by all the demonstrators and this crazy urge to get beaten up and arrested.
Why are they doing this instead of letting the Republicans have their Convention in peace?
There’s nothing that can be gained by it and there’s far too much which can be lost.
Why not go home and really make the point that the Republican Convention is irrelevant this year?
I’m with them in spirit — wish I was there!
May the Goddess bless you all and be safe!
(if you don’t get it, well, you don’t get it…)
