Ouch. ABC Political punch on Palin's unAmerican past:
Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.
And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."
It was in 1994, mind you, 14 years ago, but still. Wonder if the vetters managed to miss this, too. It's not like this invites much confidence in the vetting process:
Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., the lawyer who conducted the review, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination before McCain chose her. Asked whether everything that came up as a possible red flag during the review already has been made public, Culvahouse said: "I think so. Yeah, I think so. Correct."
Okaaaaay. If I had an employee talk to me like that about work I'd given them, I'd be getting it checked, post-haste.
Unreal.

Independence!
“Uh, I think so”
What happened to late-late night?
Digg it!
Video from this year where Flailin gives a hearty endorsement of AIP:

Country First indeed…
why does Sarah Palin hate America?
Sarah Palin and the Alaska Independence Party. Palin addresses AIP convention
I grew up in the wild 1960’s and the best birth control that I had was my Catholic mother! What is it about Evangelicals that is so all-talk? I went steady (as we used to say) for four angst-filled college years and eventually married as the last American Virgin. What was missing for Bristol Palin? Maybe an absentee mother? Go Evangelicals!
It’ll be up in about 5 to 10 minutes.
why would John McCain nominate someone who hates America?
I’m not questioning John McCain’s patriotism, I’m questioning John McCain’s sanity.
it will be up shortly
patience, grasshopper
John McCain is too irresponsible to be president, and whoever his actual and eventual VP pick is will not help. Grow Up America.
Can’t wait…. nite again….
If Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr thinks he vetted Palin then Mccain should show him the door.
late late nite is up at the mothership
I just watched the last half of the Charie Rose Show.. RNC convention coverage - I laughed, but they didn’t.
All the serious people seem to be pleased as punch with Palin.. The folks who admit they are Republicans just explain it as, “we have to feed our base.” Cokie Roberts and Doris Kearns Goodwin… the two women on the show, didn’t seem to have any problem with her, which surprised me most of all.
Unless something else breaks… I wouldn’t write her off just yet.
Apparently Nightline will be discussing Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter. This is so sad. This 17 year old is going to be America’s poster child for loose morals and major mistakes and parents who do not educate and care for their teens. I empathize with this young woman and the fact that she will live the rest of her life as a failed outcome of abstinence education. I’m sure she will rally, but what a horrid thing to face at her age.
A Hugh’s list for Sarah, bridges to nowhere, pork barrel politics, out of wedlock fundie grand kids, Trooper gate and lawyering up for the legal battles. And there is oil under that Anwar ice. Where is her environmental voting record? And oh that Stevens 527s she di, isn’t he indicted which is a challenge fpr a R under Bushco.
What about Mr. Palin he gets in the WH too does he get a vetting?
And good evening Ian nice subject matter vetting…something the rethugs aren’t into so much.
The Alaska Independence Party is basically harmless. Palin’s address to them may have been a tongue-in-cheek joke.
There are so many reasons to question McCain’s Sanity, Senility, Foreign Policy Experience (how many times has McCain confused Sunni and Shia or said that Iran had ties to al Quieda)
Come to think of it Sarah makes McCain look smart in comparison maybe she is his perfect VP.
Speaking of Foreign policy experience has Obama ever gotten the Sunni and Shia confused or thought that Iran a Shia nation had ties to al Queida a Sunni group?
John McCain seems to think that simply showing up to class and getting a gentlemen’s C makes him an expert.
Didn’t his fellow pilots call him a Reverse Ace during the war.
You know, John McCain once spent 5 1/2 years without a secessionist to choose as his running mate…
CNN turned on her tonight, apparently. Was going after troopergate. I think the media may turn into a frenzy.
There’s nothing in their materials and in some YouTube clips that suggests they are not serious. Flailin is reported to have been a member of AIP, and given her enthusiastic support in that 2008 video, again without any sense of it being in jest, it seems to fair to assume she shares those views.
Now she’s campaigning with a slogan of “Country First,” yet has a background with a political party that want to leave the Union? What am I missing here?
Told ya…
This AIP stuff might have been started by redstate trolls trying to distract us from the very real ethical shortcomings of my governor.
I’m questioning his judgment. Is this how he’s gonna select cabinet members if (making sign of the cross to fend off vampires) he gets elected?

Edward, it doesn’t matter if they’re a harmless, it seems many of them are dead serious, having to explain it to Americans is going to be really really unpleasant for the campaign.
“Let him(her) deny it”.
This wasn’t broken here, and it’s already in the press.
And plenty of the the AIP types seem to be dead serious.
I don’t think Red State trolls started it, because it’s a very dangerous thing to have start getting around. “America right or wrong, especially when wrong” is a right wing touchstone.
I’m predicting she’s off the ticket by the end of the week. She’ll have an “Eagleton moment.”

Hawaii has the Hawaii equivalent of AIP, the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement The Wikipedia makes clear that this article has problems, but it offers plenty of links and a decent start on understanding the movement.
Bottom line: The “statehood” movements in Hawaii and Alaska were not unopposed.
Bob in HI
Perhaps McCain’s second pick for Veep will be from the Ecotopian Independence movement
This is why she had to get back to Alaska to deliver Trig. I am certain of it.
“This” = what?
Bob in HI
It’s basically a states’ rights party. If you think that’s problematic for the right, think again. It’s not a secessionist party as such, but obviously the word “independence” doesn’t look good.
There is a difference between the successionist movements in Hawaii and Alaska as I see it.
Hawaii was a sovereign nation with a sitting Queen when the US unilaterally staged a “coup” of sorts and removed her from the throne and annexed the islands in complete and total opposition to the native peoples. They were not given any choice in the matter. The succession movement in Hawaii is mostly Native Islanders - many with blood ties to the Queen.
Alaska also has several indigenous ’sovereign nations’ in the Inuit peoples. The US purchased Alaska (a fraudulent deal if there ever was one). When the vote was taken whether to become a state of the US or not - the voters who got to decide were white for the most part. The succession movement in Alaska is mostly whites - their issues are anger at the federal government because of all the Wilderness and Federally owned and controlled lands and a desire to be free from all federal taxes and regulations. Their platform wants to open all land in Alaska to private ownership and exploitation. As I said before - this is a “white” issue - it is not being driven by the native peoples there.
The founder of the AIP was a rabid anti-US person. He said he was “not an American, he was an Alaskan” and he gave orders that he was not to be buried under the American flag - and he is actually buried 4 feet over the Canadian border, along with is wife. The AIP is definitely a sucessionist party - they cloak it well and they also kick out people who don’t agree with them on this issue.
