John McCain made what you can consider an inappropriate joke during an interview with Las Vegas Sun reporter Jon Ralston:
(On why he didn't choose Gov. Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign?)
I appreciate his support. As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman.
(Why snub the governor?)
I didn’t mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends….I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman.
(Maybe it's the governor's approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president?)
(Chuckling) And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago….
Where to begin. First of all, as Jake Tapper points out, you might not want to be making any kind of jokes about women and Governor Gibbons, who was accused of trying to choke one in a parking lot, has been quite prodigious in the department on cheating on his wife (who he is now divorcing--more family values for all!).
But then there is Senator McCain. Here is what we do know. He called his wife a c*nt in public according to some book buy some writer. He left his first wife for his current one after she was disfigured in a car accident. And he has an explosive temper.
So all in all, these is probably not the kind of waters you want to wade into, Mr. McCain.

John McSame is truly a light weight. Any person with any sense would always speak kindly of a sugar momma with the big bucks that got him elected to the senate.
The saddest display of stupidity is his threat to take on any assassin in hand-to-hand combat (no secret service protection needed for this formidable warrior). This 72 year old needs a reality check in many ways, but he needs to get over his high-school-harry bravado. It makes him look stupid - or maybe he is stupid, and he just showed his hand. We have had 8 years of bravado. It is time for the pompous threats of our leaders to end - both toward women and world leaders.
I think he was trying to make a joke about the kind of question the reporter was asking. The classic no-win question is “when did you stop beating your wife?”. But he’s still an idiot for saying it even without the additional not so fun facts about Nevada’s governor.
Hey, gotta love the Craig/Vitter Protect Marriage Act for more family fun!! whoot!
When I was a kid, I didn’t understand what was supposed to be funny about the so-called joke, “When did you stop beating your wife?” The household from which I fled as a teen was so violent that as a girl, I just assumed everyone in other families got beat up all the time, too.
Time passes. My life is very, very different. Nobody beats me up. And McSame’s “joke” still isn’t funny.
