David Plouffe, Sen. Obama's campaign manager, gave a presentation you could nickname "viability in Powerpoint" to the DNC and members of the media in Washington today. It shows that Obama is consolidating Democrats, performing extraordinarily among women and well among Hispanics in recent polling, and of course is turning red states such as Virginia, Florida and Missouri blue.
It is very interesting, and shows what kind of historic year this can be, if the Obama Team runs a tough, organized and on-message campaign. So far they are doing a good job, but in the past, it is August or so where Democratic nominees have gone to die politically.
So cautiously optimistic is probably the best frame of mind if you're a progressive.

After Obama’s totally depressing capitulation/spin/lack of leadership on FISA, my progressive frame of mind is not even close to cautiously optimistic. Can you tell David Plouffe that if they aren’t careful, the blue states are gonna turn red while the red ones turn blue? Note to Obama: You are interviewing for a job where you have to promise this: “uphold and defend the Constitution.” That includes the amendments, like number 4. You might want to start practicing now or people may assume you don’t know how. And P.S.: Just like regular people follow the Hollywood box office numbers these days, we also know what cloture is and we are keeping score.
After Obama rolled over on FISA, I lost a lot of my progressive hope. I’m still going to vote for Obama, but he’s rapidly becoming simply the lesser of evils, just like every president I’ve ever voted for. I was hoping, for once, that I could actually vote FOR someone as opposed to against someone else.
Boxturtle (I hope he got his 30 pieces of silver from Reid assayed before he closed the deal)
I keep wondering how fucked up this country needs to be so that the sheeple will wake up. I was sad but optimistic after the Supremes appointed Shrub. I figured that Shrub will fuck things up so bad that it would be 50 years until another republican gets a whiff of the white house. Silly me.
I’m ambivalent about Obama. Just another (talented) shill. He campaigned for Lieberman. He lends his name to blue-dog dems. He approves the shredding of the constitution.
I wonder, if McCain got in, would the sheeple then realize how fucked up this country is?
Nawww…
Any suggestions, folks?
Maybe we don’t really need a constitution. We could just trust our government to look after our interests - surely they can be trusted.
I see a solution to unemployment in the present Bush economy. When all of the wealth in the country has been consolidated in the top 1%, we will have a labor force that can compete with China. Shoot, if I get hungry enough, I will work for a dollar a day. Besides, any person who refused to work could be declared a terrorist and water-boarded. That should get any slackers to cooperate. I believe that all of the legislation is already in place for this to take place (except they will have to do away with the minimum wage).
By the way lady, Alex will almost certainly be drafted to fight in Iraq. I feel certain that it will take at least 30 years to pump all of the oil our of that country, so either plan to move or begin his military training. If the only paying job left was military, there will be no need of a draft.
Seriously, I did contribute to Chris Dodd yesterday. His anti-FISA speech gave me hope. Before Obama, I had never contributed to any candidate before. Somebody convice me that he is a page turner that will end our nightmare. My optimism is in the tank.
