According to the Pew Research Center, when asked to describe their views of McCain in a word, the term "maverick" didn't even come up. Nor did "reformer" or "independent." Ruh-roh. It looks like the embrace of Bush, 100 years in Iraq and his newfound affection for Bushenomics have all done serious damage to McCain's perceived maverickness:
John McCain once had the most powerful brand in American politics.
He was often called the country's most popular politician and widely admired for his independent streak. It wasn't too many years ago that "maverick" was the cliche of choice in describing him.
But that term didn't even make the list this year when voters were asked by the Pew Research Center to sum up McCain in a single word. "Old" got the most mentions, followed by "honest," "experienced," "patriot," "conservative" and a dozen more. The words "independent," "change" or "reformer" weren't among them.
Voters have notoriously short memories, but it could be argued that McCain cheapened his own brand.
He embraced President Bush and attempted to become, like Bush, the choice of the Republican establishment. In the process, he helped obliterate recollections of his first run for president, when he became the first Republican in a long time with strong crossover appeal to independents and Democrats.
Losing his reputation for independence could prove particularly costly this year.
It turns out that there may be a cost for flip-flopping on tax cuts for the top 1% and wanting to "bomb bomb bomb Iran." Who would have thunk it?
And the cost could be a whole set of voters (independents) who will be very important in determining the outcomes in states such as Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, to name a few. Additionally, being tied to the GOP brand this year is as close as it gets to a political death sentence (ask GOP House candidates in Mississippi, Louisiana and Illinois about that).
John McCain may just have lost his greatest asset.

Hey, Cliff, did you see this in today’s New York Times? Ad Nags is trying to start a trend:
Age is the new black . . . so to speak.
“Dwelling on age carries the obvious risk of a backlash, which explains why other issues become useful proxies as campaigns try to talk about that which should not be talked about.”
Right, Nags. You keep telling yourself that. An “obvious” risk.
He’s not so old…he’s just fundamentally “Confused”..(that should piss him off).
Plenty of “older” people have better judgment and comprehension of the world than McConfused.
He’s a cop out, and he doesn’t know his facts. That is why he’s confused. He’s just not very smart.
Hey watertiger,
I hadn’t seen it, but will most definitely check it out. Thanks!
Honest? Oh good grief.
Puhleeze.
FWIW, I think he believes he is honest. I also think he’s too dumb to know when he’s being played. His lobbyest-advisors convince him that he’s really doing the right thing as they push their corporate agenda. And McFool believes them.
Remember how it seemed that Reagan was unusually forgetful? And then we learned that it was the beginnings of Alzheimer’s? Is it possible that McCain is going the same way? Those close to him may not even know it. If they do know it, that might explain why the press was given just 3 hours to examine his voluminous medical records. I think it might be a good idea for Democrats to look into this. Might be useful when the Republicans’ smear campaign gets going at fever pitch.
Indeed. This might prove to be his final undoing; since the “maverick” and “straight talk” memes have been aggressively promoted by the traditional media, who have their own preferred narrative. History shows that when they finally give up on a narrative that is losing traction the replacement can be a total reversal of position.
We saw this when the TM finally figured out that Hillary could not win; After the Indiana primary the story line completely changed, almost overnight.
The current narrative is that McCain is the straight-talking maverick, combined with the “disgruntled Clinton supporters will flock to McCain” narrative. Neither of these aligns with those oh-so-inconvenient facts. “Maverick” isn’t sticking; Democrats are not flocking to McCain; Mr. Straight Talk contradicts himself on a daily basis.
Eventually even the TM will figure this out, and they have over 4 months in which to do it. When they do, it will be “interesting”.
John McSame is a Bushco tool
McCain is bringing a knife to the fight ($84mil).
Obama is gonna bring a gun ($1/4billion-plus).
McCain does a great job of doddering all on his own.
…Butter on that popcorn, m’dears?

Let’s all Digg this post!
hmmm
“maverickness”
me no likey, let me try some conjugation myself;
“maverickosity”
“maverickismisimo”
“maverickshmaverick”
“maverickouso”
“ford maverick”
that’s the winner for me, “ford maverick”
whew
It also seems that McCain has taken on a bit of Bush’s heh-heh-heh style. I find it disconcerting. It’s like he’s becoming a whole different guy…and an unpleasant one, at that.
Well, maybe he’s at least honest about his age?
Yeah I found that one funny too (in an ironic way of course)
Nicely done. If not maverickness I’ll go with “maverickismisimo”
McCain is a placeholder, pure and simple. His campaign was revived by the closest thing that the right-wing could get to a consensus. Rudy! was too much like the crazy uncle and his use of a noun, verb and 9/11 was beginning to fail even with the faithful. Mitt and the Mormons scared too many folks, especially the fundies and catholics, and Fred Thompson couldn’t even keep his campaign staff awake, much less an audience of “supporters” not paid to be there. Ron Paul, well there’s a bit of cult-level craziness and he’s still around making mischief in the wings, it’s going to be fun to watch that show in Minneapolis this summer.
Obama wins this year, and the republicans begin working to undermine him as soon as possible with the intent of replacing him in 2012. Crazy John takes his zillionaire trophy wife and hits the speaking circuit making an occasional appearance in the Senate, and becomes a back-room kingmaker for the next election cycle.
John McCain supports torture of human beings by the United States of America.
John McCain:
Worse than Bush
This is not your father’s Ford Maverick
maveridickety?
I don’t want to be an ‘elitist’ (why, I’m not sure), but I just sense that the USA cannot endure anaother round of stupidity. Bush was dumb. McCane is dumber. It’s not age — my 90 year old father is smarter and quicker on the uptake and has a much better sense of what this country needs than McCain. McCain has been privileged. He had a a tough time as a war prisoner. That’s not heroism; that’s just shit, and lots of other guys suffered that, too. Not enough to qualify one to clean up BushCo’s mess.
I’ll go with “mavrickosity”
sounds kind of…oily
do not underestimate the power of bigotry and fear in this country
this morning in my liberal town, I actually heard some people saying;
“can you believe the supreme court let the terrorists go free?”
and everyone agreed witht he indredulous nature of the person talking
I of course had to chime and and put them all in their place;
“what on EARTH are you talking about?…the supreme court didn’t let ANYONE “go” the supreme court said “if you were arrested by someone just so they could take their business or your wife or keep you from reporting a crime, you have a right to show they arrested them for no reason at all, you have a right to prove they made up crap about, and you are saying they are WRONG?
WHAT COUNTRY DO YOU LIVE IN?”
anyway, the point is athat all these people are finding any reason at all to vote against the black man without having to admit they are prejudice
¿Quien es mas Maverick?
Juan McMaverick es mas Maverick…
(apologies to Billy Crystal)
Now there’s an idea I can get down with!
Maverikassity.
mavericktion?
That’s not heroism; that’s just shit, and lots of other guys suffered that, too. Not enough to qualify one to clean up BushCo’s mess.
But it *is* enough to confer “foreign policy experience” upon him. I know this because I heard JoeScar say it, with maddening frequency, this past week on his show.
Hey…James Garner is the “Maverick” gimme a break:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYrsDT02OcE
I wish punaise were here to render the final word on [state of being a maverick}
punaise, are you lurking out there?
MaverIraq for 100 years?
maverick: my very crazy uncle
Ding!
John McCain:
“Old”
get used to it, republicans
Thanks…that one just seemed right.
I wonder how “Old McCain” would work out as a brand name for a cheap whiskey
remember Lieberman corrected mccavandish and just a day or two later mkkkaverickishness repeated the same think Joe corrected him on?
does indeed sound like the ford maverick is getting Alzheimer’s
anyone ever notice how Alzheimer’s sounds like “old timers”
interesting
my girlfriend worked for a mohs surgeon who wound up with cancer himself and had to have his toe removed
believe it or not his name is Dr toelercio (Doctor toe lessio we started to call him)
I gave him a pedicure promotion with ten percent off
no kidding, that story in it’s entirety is 100 percent true
Dang, that’s a good ‘un. I see a sticker on my bumper!
What do you think punaise would say? I love the old talk. W is about 20 years younger that Mc, and he has aged unbelievable in office. No matter the health…age causes limits and fatigue. No doubt.
McConfusion is more like Hoppalong Cassidy than the Maverick:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttlzOxjaWms
Yes, BushBoy has not aged well. He looks like crap and he sounds dumber and lazier than when he got started. And did you notice that he *handled Angela Merkel again! Jeez. His father must be counting the days til this ordeal is over. Barb, who knows? I doubt she did much parenting of this reprobate son of hers.
anyway, the point is athat all these people are finding any reason at all to vote against the black man without having to admit they are prejudice
Obama isn’t going to be any more “black” in November thasn he is now.
John McCain is aging before our very eyes.
There is far more prejudice against the elderly than against blacks.
As long as we’re talking about possible Alzheimer’s, let me say that I find it very odd (spooky, even) the way JoeLie and Lindsay follow McC around. It’s as if they’re there to keep McC from committing gaffes or exploding or something. Like they’re baby sitting.
Maybe McC has to put up with them because he refuses to be wired up?
It really is a strange trio…like the three stooges…
Larry, Curly, and Mo.
Creepy, isn’t it!?
Thanks Dearie! Maybe I should copyright it!…Nah, I’d rather just share it with the world….
Joe Biden said it best. John McCain is likely the most qualified candidate of everyone running, but he’s wrong. something along those lines. Biden said that in an interview when he was running.
it’s maverickmentum!
