MSNBC - Obama is the nominee. It seems everyone is agreeing. Obama is the nominee. Thank God they broke away from McCain's oratorical waterboarding of all cable tv viewers.
CNN - Same thing. Obama is the nominee. Roland Martin is talking about how we have finally lived up to The I Have A Dream Speech
Cesca once again gets McCain's forced, fake, forensic performance exactly correct: "That's not change we can believe in." (big fake grin) And now he's going off on a long negative rant about Senator Obama. Seriously -- he sounds creepy and sinister. Like a second-rate surrogate delivering an introductory speech for a candidate running for sheriff in Toothlessburg.
9:12 - Fox is talking about McCain again. We're in the strategy room, with Chris Wallace and Karl Rove's anti-social disorder. I think I just saw Rove shoot his forked-tongue across the glass table and slurp up a bed bug.
9:17 Brit Hume likes Chris Wallace's tie. Hume almost smiled. Almost.
9:18 - David Axelrod on CNN: McCain will give us four more years of Bush.
Jeffrey Toobin: "What about that McCain speech. It was awful....A couple hundred people...I think that was one of the worst speeches I've ever seen."
9:21 - Bob Cesca just reminded me that Hillary Clinton is up 55-45 right now in South Dakota. If it ends up that way, Tom Daschle--a big Obama guy--ain't going to be too pleased.
9:25 - CNN declares that Hillary Clinton has won South Dakota. She is up 57-43. I must admit to being a bit surprised.
Even Alex Castellanos just said "Thank God" this isn't a speechmaking contest.
Carville: "I gotta hand it to the Republicans, McCain was the youngest person in that room."
9:32 - Hillary Clinton about to speak. What will she say, and will she help Obama by reminding us that Senator McCain dates back to the Pleistocene Era.
Hillary Clinton congratulates Obama.
Women supported her who were in their 90s, born before women could vote...and just as McCain was reaching puberty.
There are more people behind Hillary Clinton than were in McCain's entire crowd.
Hillary Clinton points out that they continued on when all the naysayers counted her out. Now, I don't mean to be a jerk here, but doesn't this result prove the naysayers were right? She might have saved a lot of money and time if she had listened. Just a thought.
Committed to uniting our party. Good.
9:43 - Somewhere at this very moment, Mitt Romney's hair is combing itself.
9:49 - Hillary Clinton is "making no decisions tonight." The crowd erupts. Yes, drag this out longer. Smart. Elect McCain. Ensure that Roe v. Wade is overturned, the Iraq War continues, tax cuts continue to reign down on CEOs and torture becomes state policy. Those are some smart Democrats cheering for that line...
9:53 - Wolf Blitzer: "No signs of conceding." She said she will do what's best for her party. No. She would do what other people do who lose races and concede if that were the case.
Montana polls close in 5 minutes.
9:58 - Somewhere at this moment, Mike Huckabee's deep-frying a squirrel
10:00 MSNBC calls Montana for Obama
Tom Brokaw thinks Hillary Clinton's speech was about "leverage." He is also disagreeing with Howard Fineman. He says a source close to the Clintons has said that she wants the vice-presidency, that it will lead to "16 years of Democratic presidents."
10:08 - A historic moment, the presumptive nominee, Barack Obama, takes the stage in St. Paul with his wife Michelle.
Classic Cesca: "Holy crap! Gloria Borger is a doofus!"
Back to Obama: He is thanking everyone
The primary season has finally come to an end
"Because of you, I can say I will be the Democratic nominee for the United States of America" - Huge eruption. Like McCain's speech. If the average attendee there were 1/3 their age, had all their teeth still in and were on Rush Limbaugh's meds.
Nice shot by Obama: "I will respect John McCain's accomplishments, even if he chooses to deny mine."
It's not change when he stands with Bush 95% of the time, Bushenomics, etc.

Cliff, ya wanna go back downstairs and leave the Pups a linky to here? Please?

Just Curious.. the convention is not until august.
Currently, Obama is down in the gallup tracking poll by 1 point nationally, and depending upon whose ‘map’ you are looking at, has a 50-50 shot of winning in November.
A lot can happen between now and august.
How far down in the polls do you think Obama should be allowed to go before enough Superdelegates switch their preferences to Clinton to give her the nomination?
I know all of you are absolutely dedicated to a Democratic victory in the GE. So, how badly does Obama have to be doing before you consider the fortunes of the party (let alone the country) trump your dommitment to Obama?
5 points?
10 points?
15 points?
Go down with the sinking ship, the party and the country be damned?
OMFG, Harold Ford preening over Obama and then turning around and calling McCain’s speech his best ever and saying how it’s going to make BO work hard to answer his charges.
Stinker.
FunnyD
Good idea…will do
Get this moron out of here
HISTORY!
And now above the “fold”. Thank you.
You can Digg this post HERE
History was made tonight. And don’t forget, BO gets to give his acceptance speech on the anniversary of the I Have a Dream speech.
hi again.
and OBAMA will win.
Hands down.
More Hillary news… um sorry but that is not today. The NY meeting is tomorrow.
It’s wonderful to have a nominee and find us all united in support of him.
Except, possibly, Harold Ford, who seems determined to recite all of the McCain GOP talking points approvingly. Why does the Democratic party let this fellow go on teevee?
Hi Cassie….. come on into Cliff’s eddie of the lake….
That is not how politics and history works reguarless of the media.
Obama is the next president. McCain would be a laugh in this country and a joke to the world.
Amen!!!
Tweets asks a good question. If Hillary wants a private meeting with Obama, why is she telling the press?
Yeah, even scrolling by is getting tiresome.
As in Booooooring Dahling, in the British sense used as a put down.
Anyway…
Hi, Raven. How’s the critters?
FunnyD
And hi again to you, Cassie!
Do we know times for Clinton and Obama speeches tonight?
FORD needs to go home - loser. Him and Rove can go to heck.
Can I sit with you in case I get lost again? Is there a diving board on this side?
Harold Ford can’t help but kiss Republican ass. It is the DLC’s primary function after all.
Just came back in from planting a few more flowers, had to escape McSame…listened to the CNN folks for awhile. Very thoughtful discussion, even from Suzanne Malveaux, who normally causes me to throw things at my teevee…generational change. And I’m not so old yet that it scares me!
People - this is HISTORY. This is happending now, not the past - not the future. Its been 5 months can we please enjoy the now for a single second?
I have a feeling that the Clinton campaign is conducting communications entirely through Andrea Mitchell. And that the Obama campaign is not.
He’s the one I was liking when he said McStupid married a beer fortune.
OMG… I love me some Jeffery Toobin….. Hahahahahah….. “wasn’t that the worst (mcbush) speech….. the crowd was cationic…. hahahaha
David Gregory wants to talk…and talk…and talk about the “Unity Ticket”
Let’s talk about the fact that we just got a nominee
Toobin is roasting McCain’s speech on CNN, calling it (rightfully) awful, and asked “What was that?”
Aunt Betsy has a snoopy happy dance thread going at the treehouse.
Red Sox announcer(not Joe Castiglione): “This is a very different feel from any June series between these two franchises in their history”.
I spit up my water!!! And David Gergen what a total weenie/tool…
Hillary won South Dakota.
Savoring this moment. McCain must be absolutely terrified, knowing about the huge crowds Obama garners and transformational change Obama represents.
Hillary wins South Dakota, per MSNBC
Caught the end of McCain’s speech. Very slick and arch. “Obama is a guy who makes a great first impression…” creepy laugh. Who is writing his stuff, Rove? Really down and dirty picking up HRC’s drumbeats. Also taking an Edwards tone about Washington corruption. AS IF HE has not prostituted himself constantly over the years. I think he is channelling …
trust me trust me trust me.. the creepy intimate undertone.
The gloves are clearly off with this slick codger.
I’ve learned. I now scrolllllll downnnnnnn. It works!
sure… this side has the diving board and the depth is 8.5 feet so you can really let loose…
Free at lat, free at last, thank God almighty I am free at last….
from Dem sniping, temporarily.
That was all he had for us. The rest of Ford’s trick bag is chock full o’ Republican ball coddling.
I recall when I voted for Edwards and when he dropped out.
I found them both to be very much the same (Obama and Clinton). In many ways they are with the exception of the campaigns they ran (and their theme; beyond tactics).
I did not think Obama could do it, never mind history for a minority; its also history for the underdog story. Change is coming.
- Wow, the are calling for South Dakota. If Obama does not have the last win (even though ahead) tonight then Clinton will likely keep going for a bit.
Andrea Mitchell saying that Hillary really *wants* the V.P. slot.
Once again, my admittedly minority position is that it would be a great move. Brings every Democrat in the country out to vote, and the down-ticket effects would be tremendous.
If Hillary puts her heart into it, avoids a back-stabbing posture - I say - do it. Use her as a congressional ram-rod - put her in charge of the health-care overhaul, and WIN THE DAMNED ELECTION!!
with a cool picture of Barack
That, and $4 will get her a latte.
Josh Marshall is saying that Fix News was giving competing explanations for why McSame’s speech sucked!!! Hahahahaha.
Gosh, McCain is talking about being a POW again, as he always tells us he never campaigns about….
McCain:
“annointed by my country:
with Humility of a man… ummm
that is fxked up. McCain was “annointed” - who is he Jesus?
South Dakota exit polls are out
It looks like Clinton 53, Obama 47
Obama loses women 57-43 (ties with men)
Obama loses older voters (60 and over) 65-35
Obama loses white voters 55-45
Obama loses those making less than 100k 55-45 (wins 49-51 among the wealthy)
Obama loses democrats 55-45 (wins independents by only 2 pts 49-51)
obama loses moderates 48%-42%
Obama loses all religious demographics by at least 8 point — except for those who answered “none”, which he won by 8 points.
Get you a gallon of gas here if you have an extra $0.09. *g*
Obama wins the Democratic nomination.
Obama wins the General Election.
President Barak Obama.
I love that Tweets is taking off the gloves somewhat. Poor Andrea was _very_ taken aback. Wish he’d ended with “yeah, whatever, go back and tell your sources what I said to stfu unless they want to go on camera.”
FunnyD
As goes South Dakota, so goes South Dakota
Agree.
He is trapped in his memories.
CNN… Wolf….. “Too little … too late”…. hahahahahaha…
I’m assuming you’re new to politics, and never heard of Al Gore, Howard Dean, John Kerry….
Fix News was giving competing explanations for why McSame’s speech sucked!!!
They should hire Harold Ford. He has a very clear understanding of the *brilliance* of McShame’s speech.
The North Vietnamese must have given him lots of material to study about American greatness during the years he was there. Otherwise, how in the hell would being a POW qualify one for being the president? I see no connection.
OK, now NYT calls South Dakota.
I’m rather looking forward to a generational change, and I’m 62½. I most CERTAINLY do not want to have my doctor, lawyer or president my age or older than I am. I’m happy with at least 10 years younger.
guess you’ve seen his true colors now, too.
FunnyD
In any case the nomination process is over. That is why Obamaa is in Larry Craig airport country tonight.
Never assume, you know what they say about what it does to - you.
Brilliant!
Why is Chris Matthews talking about Bill Clinton? This is Barack Obama’s night.
Thanks, Cass. Not that we can’t do some Snoopy dancin’ here, too.
It’s about forking time!
FunnyD
You really think that will happen? I just don’t think they (don’t forget Bill) will be unable to subjugate their personal ambition and place the good of the administration, and ultimately the Country, ahead of it. I actually thought this was the worst of all possible outcomes. I had thought perhaps Obama would ritually offer and Ms. Clinton would ritually decline, but i had never really imagined her accepting. Obama loses all credibility of a new direction and the DLC is going to do everything possible to ensure this is business as usual.
I am extremely disappointed (to put it mildly) and actually feel somewhat sold sold. Hell, I will feel totally sold out if this should transpire.
Me too. Obama/Clinton ‘08.
Tweety is an odd duck indeed
Congratulations to the democratic party for fielding such able candidates. Now on to November. Go Obama.
Vietnam

Yesterday I got a letter
from my friend
fighting in Vietnam
and this is what he had to say:
‘tell all my friends
that I’ll be coming home soon
my time ‘ll be up some time in june.
Don’t forget’ he said
‘to tell
my sweet Mary
her golden lips as sweet as cherries’.
And it came from:

It was just the next day
his mother got a Telegram
it was addressed from Vietnam.
Now mistress Brown she lives in the U.S.A
and this is
what she wrote and said:
‘Don’t be alarmed’
she told me the telegram said
‘but mistress Brown
your son is dead!’
and it came from:

Somebody please stop that war now!

Me, I’m salivating at the prospect of a series of presidential debates between that repulsive old fossil and Sen. Obama. To paraphrase the Current Occupant: Bring. It. On.
Terry McCauliffe (sp?) up to introduce HRC. He promised on Monday to drink some rum with Morning Mika Wednesday morning - I’m thinking he might get a head-start right after his introduction is finished…
or should I say an odd canary?
Its the injured puppy technique. Some people will buy the hurt puppy that they feel sorry for.
I don’t think 65-70 is too old, but someone that age with recent cancer, mobility problems and continence problems is not acceptable. (Plus just being out of it, not keeping current is a problem.)
Evening all.
If Obama doesn’t pick Hillary for VP-and she should, in accordance with the LBJ Principle-”better to have her inside pissing out than outside pissing in”-but if he doesn’t pick her I hope he asks RFK Jr. What a team they would be.
Please ….. save me from the blathering on CNN…. give me a break… do the American people want someone who will keep us safe….. Gee where has that meme gotten us today>
Hillary Clinton speaks
This ain’t 2008, pal.
Running against the Corporate Media/Right Wing Noise Machine is a winning strategy.
Besides, John McCain is arguably the weakest Presidential candidate in history.
Bye Hillary. Buh bye Bill.

Cliff Varnell
Old White Guy for Obama/Sebelius
It’s on C-span 2
She’s praising Obama
She’s starting off very gracious. Which is excellent.
Oops!
This ain’t 2004, pal.
Hillary is wearing blue for the first time in a year! Shocking.
Obama is going to do a great job in the debate. Esepcially when he is now working out to go against the R party.
In hotel in NYC…. victim of their choice of cable networks…… sniff sniff
Clinton started w/ SD state - but not herself. The voters. She is doing right. This will be a good speech.
IMHO, Obama will pick the hawkish former Republican, Raygun Navy Sec Webb.
Who wants to bet John McTeleprompter is tangled in the wires of his teleprompter as Hillary speaks? I bet!
it’s going to be a good year for popcorn!
You really think that will happen?
Smart money’s probably against it. Obama *has* to offer it though, and if she wants it, he damn near has to let her have it. Otherwise, the party will fracture.
I have a hard time believing she really wants it.
Why so you want another DLC hack if you figure it is time to run against the Corporatist? Were you unaware Ms. Sebelius is the DLC’s rising star?
thank you!!
For you, anytime!
As a sort of an aside, let’s all bear in mind that if she doesn’t “concede” it gives her the opportunity to have some serious clout at the convention in terms of platform. Which is important.
Hillary wants her supporters to appreciate Obama and his supporters. All across the country we saw lots of new supporters for the first time.
Hillary’s crowd is 25 times what McCane’s was.
Webb is certainly a possibility, as is Wesley Clark.
I think I recall that she wore that color for one of the debates. It’s one of my favorites, so it stuck in my mind.
He has political game. Like his responses to stupuid stuff like he is a lattee sipping liberal….
“sometimes I like a beer and a burger…and, ahh sometimes I like wine and a STEAK”
I’m plussed!
*bl*
SIDEBAR NOTE:
Tonight on my blog, a woman who was at the Maine Democratic STate Convention this past weekend with me left a comment on my blog today. She thinks the people behind Hillary a couple months ago who were holding up signs that read, “Hillary! Wash my clothes!” (or something to that effect)….was done by Obama supporters. Oh for crying out loud! I told her those were Operation Chaos assholes.
It’s rumors like that that has fueled some of the bullcrap.
She did not need to do the popular vote stuff…imo
if she doesn’t “concede” it gives her the opportunity to have some serious clout at the convention in terms of platform.
I don’t think she’s gonna wait that long to use her clout - that’s gonna happen throughout the course of *this* week…
And Obama’s will be x10 of this.
Webb is great. He passes the smell test as a thinker, a worker, and a truth teller. I would love to see him on the ticket (or the Senate, etc).
-
Clinton speech - still great. Her supporters are coming. You can hear it in their jest and cheer and jeers.
LOL Wow, that long ago? Okay.
hmmm … claiming most votes is a little disturbing … hoping she does not go there for a finish
Hillary looks comfortable and happy tonight.
Hillary just said that South Dakota just had the LAST word in this primary season. Montana polls close in 25:36. So she is just plain wrong again.
I really hope that Obama rejects her bid to be offered the VP. We can see a preview of what it would be like just the way she is trying to take away his special accomplishments today.
Again, her special question is offered “Who will be the strongest candidate to take back the White House…”
Go home with dignity Hillary if you have any sense of decency left in you.
Oops, Hillary now repeating her fallacious argument that she won the “popular vote”
She knows there is no national “popular vote”
What she won was some delegates–fewer than Obama
What is she up to? Now repeating her “swing state” argument
Hmmmmmm, ‘pundits’ blamed for Obama’s candidacy, again. Strangely echoing McInsane’s message…I’m a conspiracy theorist…anyone biting?
She stood up for breaking the rules. Yep! Another Bush’s 3rd Term candidate. *rolling eyes*
Hillary is not going anywhere.
Doesn’t sound like she’s conceding anything…
Umm it was interns from the pop music 104.1 Boston station - BCN (WBCN).
I would guess on orders (unkowinlgly) from corporate whores.
yup
This is disgusting. Just listening to McSame’s speech now. He read what out what basically read like an obituary for Senator Clinton. He’s an arsehole.
I’m sure Karl Rove who is part of her campaign is telling her to make statements that are false and keep repeating them. Hey! It worked with the neocons so why not the Hillary supporters! Spit.
She’s using past tense. We stayed the course together.
