Talk of investigations has resurfaced now that McClellan has corroborated, in his new book, accounts of the Bush Administration's utilization of "propaganda" to sell the Iraq War to the American public along with a compliant media.
Yet, here is the thing. As Jon Perr points out with his typical brilliance, on many occasions John McCain proffered the very same line of bull in strikingly similar language. So do we need to investigate a man who may be our next president, for helping "catapult the propaganda," to quote the inartful George W. Bush? (Here is the whole quote):
"See in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." (ed: see the video above).
Let's return to McCain for a moment. Regarding the "straight-talker," maybe what Jon has put together will help convince you of the need to investigate Mr. McCain:
On the Run-Up to War
"Look, we're going to send young men and women in harm's way and that's always a great danger, but I cannot believe that there is an Iraqi soldier who is going to be willing to die for Saddam Hussein, particularly since he will know that our objective is to remove Saddam Hussein from power."
John McCain, September 15, 2002."But the fact is, I think we could go in with much smaller numbers than we had to do in the past. But any military man worth his salt is going to have to prepare for any contingency, but I don't believe it's going to be nearly the size and scope that it was in 1991."
John McCain, September 15, 2002."He's a patriot who has the best interests of his country at heart."
John McCain, on Ahmed Chalabi, 2003.On Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction
"Proponents of containment claim that Iraq is in a "box." But it is a box with no lid, no bottom, and whose sides are falling out. Within this box are definitive footprints of germ, chemical and nuclear programs."
John McCain, February 13, 2003."I remain confident that we will find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq."
John McCain, June 11, 2003.On Being Greeted as Liberators
"Absolutely. Absolutely."
John McCain, asked by Chris Matthews, "you believe that the people of Iraq or at least a large number of them will treat us as liberators?" March 12, 2003."Not only that, they'll be relieved that he's not in the neighborhood because he has invaded his neighbors on several occasions."
John McCain, asked by Chris Matthews, "And you think the Arab world will come to a grudging recognition that what we did was necessary?" March 12, 2003."There's no doubt in my mind that we will prevail and there's no doubt in my mind, once these people are gone, that we will be welcomed as liberators."
John McCain, March 24, 2003.On a Rapid Victory and Mission Accomplished
"I think the victory will be rapid, within about three weeks."
John McCain, January 28, 2003."It's clear that the end is very much in sight...It won't be long. It, it'll be a fairly short period of time."
John McCain, April 9, 2003."We won a massive victory in a few weeks, and we did so with very limited loss of American and allied lives."
John McCain, May 22, 2003."I thought it was wrong at the time. Do I blame him for that specific banner? I can't."
John McCain, on President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, May 1, 2008."Well, then why was there a banner that said mission accomplished on the aircraft carrier?"
John McCain, responding to assertion by Fox News' Neil Cavuto that "many argue the conflict isn't over," June 11, 2003."I have said a long time that reconstruction of Iraq would be a long, long, difficult process, but the conflict -- the major conflict is over, the regime change has been accomplished, and it's very appropriate."
John McCain, June 11, 2003."I'm confident we're on the right course."
John McCain, March 7, 2004."We're either going to lose this thing or win this thing within the next several months."
John McCain, November 12, 2006."My friends, the war will be over soon, the war for all intents and purposes although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years."
John McCain, February 25, 2008.On the Safe Streets of Baghdad
"[There] there "are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today."
John McCain, after touring a Baghdad market wearing a bulletproof vest and guarded by "100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead, April 1, 2007."There's problems in America with safe neighborhoods as we well know."
John McCain, March 8, 2008.On President Bush and His Team
"We are very fortunate that our president in these challenging days can rely on the counsel of a man who has demonstrated time and again the resolve, experience, and patriotism that will be required for success and the hard-headed clear thinking necessary to prevail in this global fight between good and evil."
John McCain, on Dick Cheney, July 16, 2004."I think he strengthened our national defenses. I think he has a good team around him."
John McCain, on President Bush, September 3, 2004."I said no. My answer is still no. No confidence."
John McCain, on whether he had confidence in Bush Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, December 15, 2004.On the Non-Existent Alliance Between Al Qaeda and Iran
"But Al Qaeda is there, they are functioning, they are supported in many times, in many ways by the Iranians."
John McCain, February 28, 2008."As you know, there are al Qaeda operatives that are taken back into Iran, given training as leaders, and they're moving back into Iraq."
John McCain, March 17, 2008."[Iranian operatives are] "taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back."
John McCain, March 18, 2008."[It is] common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate."
John McCain, March 18, 2008."Al Qaeda and Shia extremists -- with support from external powers such as Iran -- are on the run but not defeated."
McCain campaign statement, March 19, 2008."To think that I would have some lack of knowledge about Sunni and Shia after my eighth visit and my deep involvement in this issue is a bit ludicrous."
John McCain, March 19, 2008."Do you still view Al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat? Certainly not an obscure sect of the Shiites overall…"
John McCain, questioning General David Petraeus, April 8, 2008.On a Permanent American Military Presence in Iraq
"We cannot keep our forces indefinitely staged in the region. Were we to attempt again to contain Saddam, we would eventually have to withdraw them. The world is full of dangers and, more likely than not, we will need some of those brave men and women to face them down."
John McCain, February 13, 2003."We have had troops in South Korea for 60 years and nobody minds."
John McCain, June 7, 2007."Make it a hundred."
John McCain, told that President Bush had said American troops could remain in Iraq for 50 years, January 3, 2008."I asked McCain about his 'hundred years' comment, and he reaffirmed the remark, excitedly declaring that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for 'a thousand years' or 'a million years,' as far as he was concerned."
David Corn, January 3, 2008."The U.S. could have a military presence anywhere in the world for a long period of time."
John McCain, February 20, 2008."By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom."
John McCain, May 15, 2008.
I have a very simple question I'd like answered: What did John McCain know about the administration's propaganda he helped "catapult," and when did he know it?

Shorter McCain: After spending the last 20 years negotiating with Iran over their support for Al Qaeda — it’s time to stop the talk and start the bombing.
Bush’s ability to convince himself his delusions are real is nothing compared to McCain’s!

No reason to investigate, odds are that McBush was as shocked as anybody when the truth came out. Do you think Cheney trusted him with the turth of things? I don’t…I think Cheney fed him the classified version of the propaganda fed to the press and McBush swallowed it.
Rather than investigate him, I think we should just quote him. He’s the best spokesman our side has got!
Boxturtle (Never attribute to evil what can be explained by stupidity)
“I remain confident that we will find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.”
John McCain, June 11, 2003.
And I remain confident that we will find lepricons in Iraq, but I an not running for President. Sandman, May 30, 2008
I think McCain just got into line behind Bush, with all the other Repugs and most of the Democrats. They were all climbing all over themselves to look patriotic and not look weak on terror. It was only a few years ago, but it feels like a different era.
Remember when any dissent on this war was just countered with “How dare you not support the President in this time of war”, or “I don’t know if you noticed, but we were attacked on 9/11!” What a bunch of scumbags.
this is a terrrific piece cliff and all obama has to do once the nominations are complete is compile these quotes from mccain and air them every single time mccain makes believe he has some kind of military expertise
well well done
The sad thing is that to the media, all this confirms John McCain’s national security credentials.
Yes, what a stunning collection of furrin policy jewels.
Let the General Election be the investigation.
The final flame-out for a Decrepit Pudknocker.
I must attribute their depravity to evil even though they are stupid
sorry
I guess we’ve all heard about mccain’s infamous temper
I bet if obama reeled off these quotes in a debate we would see that temper right quick
me thinks this might be a good plan
It would be fun to have Obama’s BP monitored during that exchange.
Captain McQueeg in red faced pique while Obama’s monitor stays steady at 90/60.
Yeah, an investigation will go nowhere. McBush’s defense, of course, is, “hey, the intelligence was flawed.” He can sing that song all day.
Oh, and the leprechauns were hidden in Ireland.
I’m not sure I understand what would be investigated? So he’s a shill for Bush…. ….that is the function the tool named McCain is kept around for. But unlike the generals and the Pentagons propaganda mill, McCain is just being a loyal GOP’er, no crime there.
Just look at his complicity in these lies as a ball bat to beat him with for the next six months.
I agree. I’d be more interested in his ties to Abramoff. Whatever happened to that? There were supposedly 60 Congressmen tied up with that. It basically vanished. Mukasey obviously didn’t get things moving again. What a sham of justice.
he cannot say the intelligence was flawed if he hid the intelligence and we have proof of that
his defense falls to the depths of the sea
I think that is the main (intended) effect of the US Attorney purge. It stopped a lot of investigations. Put a lot of investigations on the back burners until new, less curious people could be installed at the DOJ.
this is a question i’d like answered for every single member of congress.
The intelligence was bogus. Congressmen, Repugs especially, but Dems too, were clearly offered reasons to support this war. Judging from the amount of money that’s been spent and made over there, I’m sure they got what they paid for.
But they weren’t just sold justifications. Remember, they were sold on the fact that this would be a short war that would pay for itself - AND US contractors would be the ones benefitting from rebuilding the country, paid for by the oil reserves. Plus, we’d have better control over the oil itself. This was sold as a win/win war with no pain.
It could have been that way too, but Bush is so bad he screwed it all up. (I’m not saying that that would have made it a good thing.)
Well said!
“what did you know and when did you know it?”
So many people to ask, so little time.
He can say anything he wants, and it won’t matter if/because the press buys it.
The intelligence was manufactured, faked, non-existent. Bush lied, people died. That’s it.
Impeach Bush and McCain goes down with him. (I know that’s not going to happen, but I do think there are other ways to defeat McBush without investigating him.)
good point and in fact he’ll say it even if the press and public do not buy it
that’s what they do, they repeat the ridiculous so it appears there’s an opinion over which interpretation is correct
OK, you know what time it is…

Accidental neologism alert! Love this one.
Trying to figure out what space lepricons occupy in the con lexicon from paleocon to neocon.
I think that the term best fits John Yoo and related bestowers of pixie dust…from the standpoint of both magic and (moral) midgetry.
Still a nice summary, thanks.
Great work,Cliff
I have a simple answer. McCain and his staff knew about the propaganda from Day 1 of the Bush Administration, and they understood it all.
Either Fitz steps up and finishes his work including the investigation and conviction of Cheney, Rove, and Bush or the new AG aftere Mukasey leaves in Jan. or Feb. needs to finish this. After January, Bush can’t commute or pardon anyone.
OT but Rezko Jury hands Team Fitzy another day of no verdict.
Fitzy beginning to hope at least Bally’s and Ceasar’s will have Tony continually held if there is a hung jury or acquital since they have sworn out a warrant with the Clark County sheriff’s office alleging an outstanding citizen like Tony Rezko would forget to pay $400,000 in casino gambling debt he rolled up with his buddy
Blagojevich fund-raiser Chris Kelly.
Ah tells ya that Revrund Wight and thet Barakkk Osama Obama is behind all this stuff metastasizin’ and not stayin’ in Vegas. And no doubt the RBC will be focusing heavily on the Rezko pending hung jury as they deliberate for our girl Hillrah! tomorrow to git Michoogigan all its 55 delegates for our girl Hillruh.
Ahm sure LHP will be at the RBC meeting to present her analytical insights into the true implications of the Rezko trial that Fitzy’s team and Amy St. Eve are playing with going into Week 3 of the Jurypalooza in the Northern District of Illinois.
And we can avenge the racial opression of white people that is pandemic in the US of A.
I would like to thank John McCain for his statements reassuring morons that the surge is going so well, because eating IEDs of course is like Sirloin and Shrimp Cocktails and when McCain travels to Iraq using uparmored vehicles and 150 Black Hawks overhead and surrounded by 2000 troops in the Green Zone, well that’s incidental sookoority.
