No, not my book (one can dream though), but a new video by Brave New Films that does in video form what I hope my book The Real McCain accomplishes in prose--laying bare the fallacy of the "straight-talk" label that has been attached to McCain like a Siamese Twin for the better part of a decade.
The video uses just some of the examples (if it used all, the video would be longer than The Godfather) of McCain's making statements about policy, politics and personal bravado that at best contradict each other and at worst simply don't comport with reality.
It is a must watch. And you can below:

I have just sent it to about 50 friends in town. Let’s get the word out, since the media are still in love with the “maverick.”
The McBush-McBush debates will be as much fun as the Obama-McBush debates. St. John is tearing himself a new one, but I can’t figure ourt which one is winning.
I said early on the McBush would be the best campaigner the Dems had and I’m pleased to see I’m correct.
The GOP brains have to know they’re going to lose this one, so I’m wondering what their fallback plan will be. I suspect their goal will be to be able to maintain a fillibuster in the Senate and they just might do that. The GOPers remaining are going to be somewhere to the right of Ghengis Khan so keeping partly loyalty on red meat issues should be possible.
And I wonder how many Dem’s elected will really be GOPers in disguise? First Supreme Court appt should tell us that.
Boxturtle (Perhaps I’m counting my chickens too soon, but currently I like the math)
This should help the cause:
Geraldine Ferraro, hahahahahahahahahahahohohohohohohohoheeheeheeheeheeheehawhawhawhawhawhawhawhaw….
“Terribly sexist”?
Uh, some examples, there perhaps, Your Bitterness?
Yes, of course: the MSM will be much more interested in covering the random and irrelevant rants of a completely discredited disgrace of a political operative than of something as significant as McCain’s stance (or lack of coherence) on fundamental issues like foreign policy and the economy.
Goes without saying: they couldn’t find and cover an important story if it walked right up and bit them in the ass at a John McCain barbecue party…
mccain sounds like a feeble minded old and impotent man who doesn’t know where he is
I think this is going to be an embarrassment when they get together in a dabate
the one thing I hope obama does not do is get mccain a little riled, he actually does pretty good when he’s a little irritated
I’m told when he gets really mad it’s scary but I have seen him irritated and it will be very effective for his campaign
Brave New Films has really hit their stride. So many great videos like the one above and this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8SZvWzP58s
Those Repubes are so negative and angry, aren’t they?
This clip is fantastic- should be the basis of a series of ads come October. Probably too early to do much with em now? People won’t start paying attention until after the conventions in August.
One wonders what favors Billary have promised Ferraro, in exchange for her unshakable support of the USS Clinton Going Down in Flames.
Thanks for being here at the Lake, Cliff.
awesome video.
I can’t see the video cause I’m at work, but this sort of pushback is crucial. Dick Morris (in yesterday’s WAPO) and Cokie (just this morning on the wireless) praised McBush’s “Maverickness.” They-and the MSM-need to understand that is nothing but a myth.
And then shut up.
Ferraro clearly needs medical help.
We’re nearly through the primary season and Hillary isn’t likely to put out much effort for Montana or South Dakota (or whatever Dakota is left).
This babies all but over after tomorrow. Puerto Rico is all gonna be phone calls apparently.
They do understand. That’s why they’re pushing so hard to keep the myth alive. It’s what they’re paid to do.
For the dial-up impaired, can anyone *please* provide a few clues as to what we’re missing?
Kinda funny that the same talking heads who have been blowin Clusterfuck lo these many years now praise McBush for disagreeing with him. Cokie ain’t drivin no straight talk express.
This just really makes me feel pretty PMS!
I think Obama has been incredibly respectful of HRC. LIke when she was misty at NH and he was asked about it. He said to the effect of, hey I get it, we all get tired on teh campaign trail.” empathy, and not patronizing or sexist AT ALL.
I’m really really tired of rabid baseless attacks from anyone D or R. get a grip.
Video shows McCain takin both sides on several issues- placing his own words back to back and left to contradict one another- very well done.
Cliff, not sure if this was your doing or not, but the “logo” and tagline, based on St. John’s official ones, at the Real McCain are brilliant. Your work is really gonna take front and center as we move through the Summer and Fall. Bravo!
http://therealmccain.com/
Good one BNF! These are the kind of things that the people need to see. But this commercial/film, is too complicated for the simple minded. Show what he said when, then show how he says the opposite and when.
this is a hammer that will destroy his incredibility.
not only contradicting himself, but forgetting what he said or denying his own exact words. With the most GOP friendly pundit, russert, Wow!
oh, right now on think progress this bodes nicely for us and accountability;
, it has attracted the attention of the national press.
now, check out my last bold over there, if you’ve seen me write here at the lake you know I do not believe they are going to give these reigns of power willingly, they came to power in a coup not an election and I do not believe for one minute they will give up the power they’ve stolen
something is a foot
The bullshit on Clusterfuck tax cuts is very well done- proves that McBush doesn’t know or care what he says and that he’ll say ANYTHING to get elected….the bottom line is that paying any attention to what this turkey says is a total waste of time- he’ll say the opposite tomorrow- and God knows what he’ll DO!
Agreed. They do not follow any rules. any.
rw & dosido -
Sounds like great fun…especially when you throw russert into the mix. Thankee!
perris
If the oligarchs want to keep the White House- they won’t give a shit who is running it for them.. Bush is disposable- Cheney is disposable. Much easier to steal it for McBush and have 100% control over him than to engineer what would in effect be a coup to keep Clusterfuck in power…
NO WAY they’d do that. You think they LOVE Clusterfuck? Hell no!!
I would like someone to ask john mccain if he will use “team b” for future attacks against countries that he “thinks” pose a threat to our national security
tea, b
I stand corrected.
Maybe “shamed” is a better term. In much the same way that the MSM bought hook, line, and sinker the fish story about Iraq’s imminent threat, it continues to perpetuate the McCain myth. Perpetuating that myth will undoubtedly lead to further suffering and death if McCain becomes President. Do those actual journalists employed within the MSM really want that legacy?
Just to throw a fly in the ointment, there will be the 27 percenters who feel even a lying, corrupt, doubletalking, feeble republican is a better choice than any dem.
27 percenters include extremely wealthy corporatists (heckuva job!) and droolers.
McBush probably has 33% of the popular vote locked in- as do the dems- the fight is always for the rest- and McBush has an uphill climb.
McCain can simultaneously support both sides of the same issue, lie, and contradict himself. Apparently these are the qualities that define Maverick for Cokie and NPR. Insane Maverick? Insane Clown Posse? A bull in a china shop?
This is a good question.
However, just by asking it, (as we know) we are now required to put watchdogs on the “watchdogs” of democracy. Like the blogs.
The current MSM is just an extension of the WH. No free press there.
I do not believe they think they can steal this election
I believe they will do something to cement the deal
I would agree with you rwcole if the president didn’t have his executive orders declaring himself the ruler of our country in ANY emergency that HE deems is a “catastrophe” anywhere in the world
for instance, if israel is attacked, the president can claim that is just such a “catastrophe”
I don’t feel as badly about this as I felt a few months ago, I know mccain’s wife is investing in his campaign by divesting herself of profitable stock, I don’t think that would happen if they thought the election weren’t going to happen or were fixed
I have mixed feelings now and am quite hopeful there really will be an election
please watch this youtube though, they were able to pull the same thing off again and now they are trying it with Iran
they are not one dimensional, if we won’t fall for Iran we will fall for something in israel…this I guarantee
OK, good point. I know some of those locked in voters. sigh. they drive me crazy.
Well he’s only contradicting himself in the eyes of those who listen to both things he says…These people don’t bother their beautiful minds with things like that.
Or people can assign it to ‘well, that was then this is now and can’t a person change his mind?”
Smokin!
In the case of THIS election- McBush will have the normal gooper 33% PLUS any ADDITIONAL voters who will refuse to vote for an African American. Pollsters probably know about how large that segment is- but don’t wanna talk about it- would make america seem racists..
Hillary is poised to win Kentucky be about the same margin as she did Indiana..
This ain’t gonna be an easy victory for Obama…
Dinosaur reporters like Cokie don’t pay attention to the internets. Its all conspiracy theories, recipes and porn. /s
The video shows several examples where he just fuckin lies about what he’s said before- the Russert example being prime.
mccain will get more then the base without lifting a finger
he’ll get the bigots and if hillary is the running mate he’ll get the bigots, the masogenists, the anti clintons and the “anything liberal is bad”s
he’ll also get the uninformed who believe he’s middle of the road
he’s gonna do fine among the republicans but the democrats have mobilized more voters who WILL vote then ever before
I do not believe with all of this going for the democrats there will be anything that will turn the election away from this party
off for some tennis
c all later
Does anyone know when congress recesses? Must be Labor Day or so? That will be the beginning of the official campaign and will make Clusterfuck an even bigger lame duck than he is already..
That’s not too far away- Just over two months.
he’s not lame so long as he can issue his “executive orders” and make signing statements
and don’t forget he can also get his pals to make “secret legal opinions” that seem to innoculate everyone and anyone from any charges
I bet he can even go back and make “retro active” signing statements
he is not a lame duck, nor is cheney, they continue to weild this power they’ve amassed
OT - (Though On Topic - it’s all dems all the time in ‘08 - just like 06. Stop worrying. People hate repugs, nothings gonna change that)
World’s cutest dog update:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com.....2f3e_b.jpg
Now 5.5 months old, 10.5 lbs.
Yeah, saw that. it’s jawdropping.
I’ve also noticed McCain answering questions with the typical “I’m all for (whatever good thing)” baseball player level cliches. IE on Stewart, he tries to use the singling out the 14 yr old in his townhall audience as an example of “I’m all for openness with the american people” or whatever and JS just swats it away “What did she ask?”
He goes into this sort of cliche laden trance monotone thing. it’s weird. as well as just being bs of course. what Brooks would call a “traditional” campaign.
EEEEEE
PPPPPP
YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
waving wildly to Your Omniscience !
the cute, it
burnsvaporizes!wouldn’t it be nice to see one about his lobbyists? He has so many that it would be a field day of corruption.
Whadya think Glenn?
lil bit and bodhi say arf
Hey Cliff !
congrats on the Loeffler, um, departure - 1 down 2 ta go ! and in only one week
two things Cliff:
1. can you explain what got in to Issikoff to report on all this - when the Vicki story broke in NYT, he was right there (along with the rest of McRib’s Newsweek posse )to defend. seriously, what makes them break away from the pack (although note his stenographic like framing)
2. have not had the priviledge of reading your book X~( - do you discuss The Reform Institute in it ?
(CNN) — Sen. John McCain Monday faulted Sen. Barack Obama for downplaying the threat from Iran and again called the Democratic front-runner’s judgment “reckless,” the latest jabs in a foreign policy fight that could continue to the general election.

“Senator Obama claimed that the threat Iran poses to our security is ‘tiny’ compared to the threat once posed by the former Soviet Union,” McCain said during a speech in Chicago. “Obviously, Iran isn’t a superpower and doesn’t possess the military power the Soviet Union had, but that does not mean that the threat posed by Iran is insignificant.
“Should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, that danger would become very dire, indeed,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said.
McCain was reacting to a statement Obama made in Pendleton, Oregon, Sunday night while he was defending his view that he would step up diplomatic engagements with Iran — potentially up to the presidential level — if he became president.
Obama noted that Presidents John F. Kennedy
Cokie recently mentioned the internet and she said it like it was some kind of dead rat the cat had dragged in. Pundits like her are supposed to be so tuned in but they are in fact completely disconnected from everything except their Koolaid IVs.
McCain comes across like a doddering uncle. THIS is their candidate?!
obama needs to ask the press;
“is mccain getting his informationn from cheney’s “team b”?, we can not trust anything this administration tells us, they hvae proven they will do anything and manufacture whatever they need to manufacture when they want to run up to war and use our military to enrich their bank accounts
there will be none of that “team b” that cheney created to get us into Iraq, not gonna happen and it will not get us into Iran”
or some such thingy
Executive orders do not enlarge presidential power- they merely stake out positions within it- and signing statements are merely statements of how this prez interprets the legislation he’s signing. They are mostly worthless- although a court might someday take them into consideration.
It’s a mistake to either over or underestimate his power. In effect- he’s runnin on empty at the moment- but retains all the commander in chief bullshit.
he seems feeble, timid and near retirement
McBush has adopted a very low key and deliberate speaking style- may have worked with a shrink on ways to keep his temper under control by adopting the speech patterns of a catatonic.
If people begin to realize what he’s doing and why he’s doing it- it could make interesting campaign fodder.
looks like there’s a new GRIT TV thread upstairs
rwcole, the power the president has is what he is allowed to take
his executive orders have not been challenged, nor have his signing statements
and he acts according to those signing statements and realizes no repercussions
do not forget, the supreme court is in his pocket, just as they said with the florida ballots;
“we are stopping it this time but nobody else gets to do it”
they can CERTAINLY say “bush had that authority due to the fact that we were at war but nobody else gets he same authority
he has whatever power congress does not take away and they have not taken away anything
I wonder if there’s any way I can retract my 1984 vote. I’m really disappointed that she can’t realize the importance of this election to the future of the country and just keep her damned mouth shut.
Congressional summer recess beging Aug 8th and runs through sept 8th. At that point, congress officially will be in session- but congress critters will be busy campaigning- so nothing much will get done.
Last chance for Clusterfuck to put his thumbprint of legislative history dies on Aug 8th.
Which signing statements are you thinking about? Most of them are interpretations that LIMIT the scope of the legislation as I recall.
Clusterfuck didn’t invent these screwball things- presidents have been writing them for years- but when push comes to shove- they don’t appear to have much power.
If someone DOES challenge presidential power in a specific instance, the signing statement isn’t likely to do any prez much good legally.
I think you have demonized this guy to the point that you have made him into an all powerful Satan rather than a fucked up washed up guy who happens to hold the keys to the Oval Office.
Oops- that was for Perris
for instance, the when congress limited power he signed
“however I can do it in the interest of national security”
I don’t have the entire list but that’s what he did with his statements
i knew that was for me rwcole, am hitting the power button now, will be back in a few hours
I…have…noticed…this…speaking…style…as…well.
Did you notice though that he kinda snarled on TDS when Jon Stewart brought up the 100 years comment? He tried to hide it by turning away and he recovered more quickly than in the past.
Hi back at ya.
He’s a great epup. “Only” issue is his constant need for attention (laying on the dining room table was a short-lived activity - must get that from me.
The Obama campaign should get a doctor to say that the McBush speaking style is:
1) Not the speaking style that he had in past video clips and
2) Is consistent with him having suffered a stroke
This would force the McBush camp to come up with some OTHER explanation for the change.
YOU LYING SACK OF SHIT……and
