It is not that often that you go and speak to an organization that once sued you (over McCain-Feingold). It is equally surprising, when you once had this to say about that very organization:
The NRA is entitled to their advocacy. I don’t think they help the Republican Party at all, but I don’t think they should in any way play a major role in the Republican Party’s policy making. [CNN, 5/12/00]
Today, McCain is speaking at the NRA's annual meeting in Louisville, KY. I wonder if he will tell them he doesn't think they should play a role in GOP policymaking?
Update: We have video! Added up top.
FYI - I'll have more today on McCain's change of heart on the NRA and gun-control policy.

So, Cliff!
Yes, Ann!
I personally think we are on the losing side of the gun issue
my dad will vote against anyone who he thinks is gonna regulate his gun away
I think we have to find a workaround
McCain really needs the NRA’s help to arm all Californians so that they aren’t forced into gay marriages. Just imagine the campaign commercials.
You ever see a freshly caught fish on the deck of a boat?
It flips, then flops, then maybe flips again…
Remind you of anyone?
NRA spin prevents any compromise.
On Raw Story: Saudi Arabia rebuffs Bush on oil production.
So much for the Decider’s jawbonin’ skills.
Please, for the sake of us all, convince your dad that no one, absolutely no one, wants to take his gun from him.
Now, if he has an AK-47, maybe we do.
Good Morning Cliff -
have you seen this ?
http://www.politico.com/news/s.....10394.html
spew alert:
me thinks they are feeling the hot breath of Mr Schecter with this “new conflict of interest policy” apparently bescared some kewl kid is gonna pick up on your work - bwaaahaahaaa !
(sorry can’t get the FDL link thingy to work on this one, but nothing really works at Politico anyway)
Yep. They win with the slippery slope argument everytime.
Though someone should point out that Bush has made it very easy to target gun owners with his unrestricted domestic spying tactics.
-G
So McCain want to kill all consitutional admendments.
How degrading that visual is every time I see it on TV.
Pres. McFlightsuit cheek-to-cheek with these a-holes, then gets smacked down once the cameras are off.
Helps that he has no shame or pride left; if he did, this wouldn’t happen.
Bush get rebuffed on oil production and the Saudis get nuklear tech. Now that some good decider’n!
Morning Cliff!
I don’t really understand this. NRA members choosing between McBush and Obama on the sole issue of gun control will pick McBush every time even without this appearence.
Oh, well, never look a gift horse in the mouth. Add it to the Two-Faced McBush file and trot it out in any city with a decent crime rate.
I’m to the right of most here on this issue, I think. Gun control doesn’t work, criminal control does. But I think every gun should be registered to an owner and a test bullet kept on file, which makes me Evil as far as the NRA is concerned.
Boxturtle (So can I still hang around?)
Breaking News:
Bush to appease nuclear weapons proliferator and rogue state North Korea with food aid.
-G
I really, REALLY want to play poker with Bush. I’d own him, his house and his library before dawn.
And I’m an amature. The Saudi’s are experts at bluffing and trickery. I just hope Bush still has the jacket on his back when he leaves.
Boxturtle (Would not play poker with Cheney. Might not make it home if I won)
personal note - prior to Rove and Addington, no one was higher on my list of Enemies of the State than Wayne LaPierre - can only hope some of “our good friends” from the Paul campaign will attend and keep it real
So, did the Saudi’s buy the nuke tech from Carlyle Group? They seem to co-mingle quite a bit with Carlyle Group, so they probably always had access to anything the Carlyle Group has access to, which is…everything!
Good thing McBush regularly flip-flops on every issue. This way we can run dueling McBush ads showing him and his flip-side side by side.
Is McShame flip flopping again?
btw - you hippies are probably in for quite a ride late am, early afternoon - it’s News Dump day and I’ll be away from toobz and teevee next 6 hours . . .kicks desk, trundles off towards dressing room
IOKIYAR
Gee, BoxTurtle, you’re no fun! I’d love to see Bush come out of there with no clothes at all, thereby fulfilling literally what we’ve been saying all along: the Emperor has no clothes!
I was trying real hard to avoid that image in my mind, never mind on national TV.
Boxturtle (*retch*)
they spin because they believe the republicans are the way to go
I agree, their spin makes it tought to work with them
BBC news…
And Saudis tell Bu’ush to get lost. Presindentin’ is losin’ its luster, ‘eh Bu’ush Boy?
I agree with you perris. It’s one of the shiniest of objects we chase and end up losing elections and all chance to effect more critical issues.
He’s already embarrassed himself enough by giving that speech in front of the Knesset. GWB trying to act like a political leader with any credibility is about as believable as him in the role of Statesman. Nevergonnahappen!
Thank you so much for this. We need McCain’s duplicity and hypocrisy shown as starkly and bluntly as possible.
I need to email this post out immediately!
Re the Saudis, they don’t have the excess capacity to pump much more than what they are currently doing.
Re the price of crude today, it’s Friday. The market is controlled by speculators and they set the price up in expectation of the weekend. All these learned and rational reasons for why the market does what i does are just so much BS 90% of the time.
Them folks at the NRA will be watchin McStain outta the corner of their eye, guaranteed.
He is still trying to mollify every winger he can but this also represents it’s own problem, even the Goopers don’t like each other.
Think Bush will pressure Mexico and Canada too? They are our #1 and #2 suppliers.
Think the secret service will make them check their firearms at the door?
Money qote:
I think someone is hinting that the US could buy a little more oil from
the country that produced the 9/11 hijackersour good Saudi friends.Bush’s feather-light pressure won’t bother Mexico or Canada.
OT: Clinton campaign admits the race is over.

Here’s what I don’t understand: Why aren’t Dems consistently saying everywhere and every time they get a chance in regard to oil prices THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ELECT TWO OILMEN TO THE TOP POSITIONS IN YOUR GOVERNMENT. The old adage is, “You get what you pay for.” In this case, that also includes, “You get what you deserve!”
I still say if having a access to guns makes everyone safe, the GOP convention should be a place where people should be allowed to pack a weapon.
-G
Owning the Bush family provides privleges for the Saudis.
ann, that’s perfect, nicely done
the Saudis know where the Bush’s have all their money buried.
How do you say Stupid Redneck in Arabic?
I bet if he knew he would remember hearing it a few thousand times.
While this is true, it is really the financial sector, hedge funds and investment banks, that are fueling the rampant speculation in commodities, crude oil and grains like rice being the two we hear most about. As I was saying yesterday, it is important to realize that the same folks the Treasury and Fed have done so much to bail out after their massively destructive forays into the housing market are now using that easy money the Fed is supplying them to run up prices and create another speculative bubble in commodities. It is insane. We are paying these people to do this to us.
and for you edification and pleasure, CSPAN 1 has Treas Sec Paulson just starting an update on the housing & credit thingee going on here
Needless to say the cost of lubricant for them to do what they do to us has increased tenfold.
-G
it’s not the bush family money, it’s your money, my money, our kids money
they’ve stolen it…that’s the money
John Capehart on MSNBC just talked about John McCain on the “Straight Talk Express”.
Say Obama names his mode of travel the “McCain Is Bush Express”, think the media will repeat that one over and over?
-G
and some day I sure hope we get some of it back; not counting on it, but it would be nice if they paid us back.
I believe it is “For you, special price!”
Wildcatter bin al Bu’ushdullah drill another dry hole.
Still batting 1,000.
They offer you lubricant?
Dude… …high class. A lot are going without.
thanks elliot! listening now (it is also streaming on cspan radio). and i see that at 1pm cspan radio will be carrying the national press club
not sure i have the stomach for it….
Good to have that video handy… In 2001, NRA also called McCain “one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment,” so today’s get-together could have all the cozy feeling of matter and anti-matter.
Marc Ambinder wrote about this on Wednesday, fyi, http://marcambinder.theatlanti.....s/2008/05/

I’m wondering if anyone will ask about that National Security Letter to the Internet Archive?
link
and for better background here’s bmaz at emptywheel on it
Thanks, it sounds like lots of bandaids.
Obama speaking now on CNN. Resonse to Knesset speech yesterday.
BTW what is it with Louisville turning into wingnut central?
President G.W. Shitheel has elevated Barack Obama to the status of leader of the Democratic Party and has also made the election about himself.
-G
they’re batty
elliot and hugh - did i just hear paulson say that our future economic growth would be driven in part by the coming recovery in the housing market? was reading something else, and only listening with half an ear..
Obama live on MSNBC talking about Bush
when we apply the revenue aquisition that’s needed to rebuild our infrastructure we need to NOT call that a “tax”
it has to be;
“re aquireing assets which were misapropriated”
BING
I think their heads will fall from the socket and they will go balistic
I want an NRA-type organization that’s solely for the protection of a woman’s right to choose. Fervent, avid, able to kill a candidacy in a single bound.
And I want the 2nd Amendment just like it is.
I don’t shoot, don’t have a gun, never have had. But I’m thinking about it.
AWESOME SPEECH! Callen em out!
Paulson said something like all this stuff he was talking about represented a $100 billion stimulus to the housing market, that it would create 500,000 jobs in housing this year, and that it would be a boost to the economy.
Morning Cliff!
I don’t really understand this. NRA members choosing between McBush and Obama on the sole issue of gun control will pick McBush every time even without this appearence.

Boxturtle (So can I still hang around?)
Sure, you’re welcome to stay.
Part of criminal control is controlling access to firearms, especially handguns. Registration is a reasonable act that the NRA opposes, apparently under the idea that if they know who owns guns they can come get them. Of course, with the Fourth Amendment in tatters they might even be something akin to right-ish about that.
I’m not sure that having a test bullet will help much. The lands change as a barrel wears, so it might not be identifiable after a few years. Besides that, barrels can be pretty easily changed on most guns. Change the barrel and you change the signature.

If only Kerry had tried this approach. . .
That’s good. I also like “Investing in our country’s lifeblood.” (electrical grid is what I’m thinking of here)
Make a few ads showing the long seconds that pass when a hospital loses electrical power. From the point of view of a patient on a ventilator. Agonizing. Then the generator kicks on. Buttons have to be pushed, settings re-set.
“All the money in the world can’t push life-giving oxygen into your lungs when you need it.”
ok thanks. not sure i’m getting anything out of this… either he’s full of it, or i don’t know enough to make sense of his talk. i suspect it’s both.
Are you including the Carlyle Group in those financiers and speculators, ‘cuz once again that comes back to the Bush family! I was just over at TPM reading John Kerry’s post at the cafe, and amongst the comments there was one that I thought was right on. It said:
posted by gonzone at 2:15PM yesterday!
I’m lookin for a transcript, I tried, but it’s ugly.
but the key will be that we are NOT “raising taxes” we are “re aquiring assets”
I love that approach
Oops, my 27 was to yellowsnapdragon @ 66
Carlyle buying Booz Allen unit stake for $2.54 billion
oh phew, I was afraid things were going downhill
Here’s another thing that’s bugging me: GWB talking about what policy should be for the middle east, after the horrendous policies that have made Israel and everyone else in the middle east so much less safe, and the delicate structures there so much weaker, and Iran so much stronger is, first and foremost, outrageous! Secondly, his theory about not talking to these people, like Hamas, the elected leadership of the Palestinians, or Syria or Iran, who we already are talking to according to the Sec’ies of Defense and State, is ludicrous. If not talking were the policy during the Clinton administration, the Irish would still be battling with the British and the terrorists attacks between the two would be ongoing to this day. Apparently talking did change hearts and minds in that case.
Babe, our generators kick in really fast.
And all our ventilators are plugged into generator circuits (we paint the plug in red). Now what do those generators run on….
But back to the matter at hand.
McCain and the NRA.
How much coverage is this gonna get? How can we help?
This just went up at Obama’s homepage.
Looks like the ticket right there on the front page. Edwards gets VP.
Oh crap, the LINK
Diesel fuel, of course.
I am not so sure that’s a good ticket but I personally love it
I believe kerry lost the states by huge margins edwards was supposed to help
anyway, I love the ticket
